Why this name?
Basically I spent too long thinking about names! I wanted something that would represent what I did, but I just couldn't nail it. Whenever I thought I'd got something good I'd either wake up the next day and hate it, or find out that someone was already using it. In the end I thought, "What the hell am I doing? This is so pretentious, just use your name. So that's exactly what I did!"
Do you play live?
Now that 'Find your own space' is finished I'm definitely looking to play out in some way. I'm currently working on a number of different ideas. The project getting the greatest amount of interest involves an art instillation. However we'll have to wait and see because I'm also keen to do club venues.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
In general I think MP3 has been a good thing. Most labels will now admit they were slow to get involved and this created a lack of direction. Put it this way, if you don't put someone by the cashier it should be no surprise that not everyone pays. That said I do find it incredible when I meet 'music lovers' who are stealing literally hundreds of albums, repeatedly, every week. That's not love, that's theft! Also I've never understood why people who claim to be music lovers will happily pay their council tax bill (which they hate), but will not pay for the music they love. I'll always make music, it's what I do and in the end the most important thing is that people hear what I do. However I work very hard at it and we all have to eat and pay the rent!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
It's unlikely that will happen. I've been signed in the past and in general it's been a good experience. However there is no real advantage at this stage in being controlled by a major. It's just not a practical way of doing business with this kind of music. Most young artists are incredibly uninformed about what a record deal will do. Most of the time getting a big deal is a bit like getting a really big bank loan, with the added disadvantage of not even getting to spend it in the way you think is best. I'd rather take the bank loan!
