Do you play live?
I love playing live. There is a rush that I get that I can't describe. I love communicating with other people that way and I love the way playing a song makes me feel...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Armed with the knowledge that I have now regarding major labels--probably not. A thriving independent label I would definitely be interested in, though!
Band History:
It's a classic story that is all too familiar: Girl from a small town in the Midwest moves to the big city to pursue her dream. Jessica Weiser, who grew up in Fishers, Indiana took the first opportunity she could to move to New York City to pursue a career in music. And at 24, her journey is impressive. After impulsively buying and teaching herself how to play guitar at age 20, she began songwriting and playing piano soon after. Just 4 years later, she has played venues across the U.S. and Canada, built up an incredible Internet fan base, released two albums independently, and has a double live/studio album due out in late 2001.
In 1998 Weiser headed to Vancouver, BC where she recorded her first songs with friend Adam Drake, and released WHAT HAS HAPPENED, a 5-song EP, in September. The quiet, intense songs on WHAT HAS HAPPENED explore loss, confusion, and emptiness. The album sold more than 500 copies, and received praise from music industry professionals, musicians, and fans across the country.
Almost a year later, Weiser's growth vocally and lyrically is showcased on TRANSITION. A move from Indiana to New York City inspired the 6-track EP with song themes ranging from broken relationships to newfound independence. Incorporating the help of Jeff White, graduate of the University of North Carolina (Asheville) in music production and recording, TRANSITION was recorded entirely in Weiser's studio apartment. An album featuring raw, stripped-down versions of some of Weiser's new songs, TRANSITION offers moving piano ballads as well as acoustic pop songs on guitar.
Weiser's smooth urban folk tunes combine elements of pop, rock, and jazz. Her rich and melodic piano and guitar rhythms are moving and sincere, and she bares her soul with smart, honest songwriting addressing political and social issues, and her own life. With a fiercely independent spirit and do-it-yourself motto, she follows in her hero Ani Difranco's footsteps--selling records without compromising her principles.
Jessica has shared the stage with Capitol/Nettwerk recording artist Tara MacLean, Dead Daisy recording artist Emm Gryner, and Shifty Disco (UK) artist Nigel Powell (of the band Unbelievable Truth). Jessica has also shared the stage/opened for: Kyler (Gypsy Rock Records), Rebecca Timmons, Jenny Bruce, and others. In August 1999 the Lilith Fair Documentary Crew taped Jessica's performance at a sold-out C'est What (Toronto) show for possible inclusion in the documentary film about Lilith Fair (premiered at SXSW in March 2001). Weiser is currently playing live shows and recording with her band, and has recently attracted attention from several major labels.
