daRem is a project that somehow evolved out my real life profession. I am working as creative director for an international advertising agency. I deal with words and visuals throughout the day, and when I come home, I have to do something different, yet creative. This is why I compose and play music. Most of the pieces are short ideas, but some of them I take a step further and shape them into songs. These songs are what I will release under the name of daRem.
Why this name?
It has something to do with my name. And I just like it.
Do you play live?
No. And I have no intention to do. My music is constructed, and I lack the skills for live gigs.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Just in the way the internet changes everything. For the first time in human history, nearly everybody can share his ideas with others. There is no more monopoly of distribution.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I wouldn't do anything that would force me to do music the way I don't want to do it. So, as long as signing with a major label means just having help to advertise and distribute my music, I would be fine - but let's be frank: there are others that deserve it more than I do. What I have to add to the world of music can be done without having a contract.
Band History:
I have always played music from the days in school, but it never was more than a hobby. I have been in some bands as keyboarder, and later on, when I got a job, I did some home recordings with various means. But I consider daRem as a fresh start, so there isn't much of a band history to tell you about.
Your influences?
It's hard to tell. My favorite artists are David Sylvian and Peter Gabriel, but as you listen to my music, you will find many pieces that show no sign of their influence at all. Another influence would be Funk, as well as Jazz, but I am not tied to a special style or genre, I always like to experiment and try things I haven't tried before.
Favorite spot?
Vienna, it's where I live and where I like to live. My favorite region elsewhere is the mid west of the US. And Bali. Bali is the closest thing to Paradise.
Equipment used:
My current equipment is all software instruments: Cubase Studio 4 as sequencer, Sample Tank XL 2.2, Kontakt 2, Miroslav Philharmonic 1.1, Atmosphere, Stylus RMX, Groove Agent 2, EZ Drummer, Jamstix, Virtual Bassist 2, Trilogy, Virtual Guitarist 2, XPhraze 1.2, Zebra 2.1, Firebird, Vanguard, Albino PS-1, DiscoveryDSP, Rhino 2.0, UltraFocus, Wuzikstation, STS-26 and Protoplasm by the god of Pad Synths, Mr. Fortune, M42 1.1, Art Vera's wonderful texture synth, and a couple of freeware synths. I use my old Roland D-70 as master keyboard, but don't use the sounds in there. In addition, I use some hardware controllers from Behringer to automate recording and sound creation.
