Why this name?
Brendan Taylor was accidentally conceived in the back of a car in 1986. His high school lover parents couldn’t have just used a condom, and then 9 months later had to give him up for adoption…Once born in May of 86’ in D.C. he was adopted by his new parents, and 3 months after being born, he moved into their house in Rockville,MD. Brendan’s aptitude for music has always been obvious, when young he used to play everything he could like pots and pans, walls, countertops, and he really liked the sound of crunching aluminum. Inevitably, as he grew up various people tried to make him pick an instrument…his drunk fake father tried to make him play the guitar, but Brendan was left handed(only with the guitar) and couldn’t play right so he gave up on that for a while. Brendan also was forced into piano by an instructor at school but just couldn’t read music so he gave up on that too. In 1999 Brendan’s adoptive parents split, and him and his mom had to move to Gaithersburg, MD (it’s still sort of Rockville though) He got a pair of drums for his birthday and started playing everyday to headphones listening to bands he liked at the time ( normal teenage stuff, No Doubt, Sublime, 311…). Brendan had always listened to the radio and was listening to hip hop when everyone else listened to rock, and listened to rock when everyone else listened to hip hop…not on purpose it just worked out that way. Brendan started jamming with kids from his middle school in early 8th grade, one year before he got expelled from Montgomery county public schools for throwing a chair at a teacher…they weren’t very good, but it felt good to play. In early 1999 Brendan got very into the then dying rave scene,(while also falling slowly in love with hip hop) and started doing a lot of drugs…He was in and out of rehabs from 99’ to 04’ and was locked up for a year in a youth behavior camp for the state between 2003 to 2004. While all this was going on Brendan was simultaneously getting really influenced by hip hop acts like J-live, The Roots, Tribe called Quest, and many other underground hip hop artists…Brendan started free styling with friends, and found he was quite good. He stared writing down his lyrics, and began to make songs…He recorded his first CD on a tape recorder using drums and beat boxing for the beats and it was the worst quality ever, he was then going by the name ‘Squirl’…It was at this time, he was skating, getting f***ed up, and just chilling out in Rockville being a founding member of the infamous rollerblading set “255 Crew” He got turntables for Christmas that year, and was still playing the drums…he was also doing a lot of bad things to good people. Plainly put, Brendan was a really horrible person until he got locked up in 2003 for 1st degree burglary…While Brendan was locked up he wrote most of his first album “The Return of the Beginning” while plotting the beats in his head to make when he went home…and he did just that. Brendan started to use his moms computer to cut and paste audio samples into break beats, and then add other samples he got from records on his turntables on top to make the beats…He also realized he could use the microphone that came with the computer to record his lyrics…that was how his first CD was born. Brendan’s love for hip hop continued to progress and he started going to open mic nights in the D.C. area such as at Capital City records or the open mic poetry nights at Bohemian Caverns…In early 2005 Brendan met a producer named Young Raven who produced beats for rappers in the D.C area and asked him to make the beats for his second CD- “HelloChangeIdiotsSayingElementalDestructionThisIsIncredibleLoveofHipHopSign”. After finishing this album, Brendan felt like he had done what he could with pure unadulterated hip hop and started to get into more rock. Mostly influenced by the Doors, Brendan set out to try and learn all he could about other kinds of music…but he didn’t know a lot. Coincidentally, soon after getting into these new things, he met his then girlfriend who turned him on to the indie rock scene…Brendan thought their pretentious rules were stupid and vowed to do something about certain views and perceptions about music. It was around this time Brendan met his birth father after contacting him through the adoption courts and found out his last name was supposed to be Taylor, so he took it! It was also at this time Brendan wrote and recorded another full CD by himself called “MEandi’. A friend of Brendan’s gave him a right handed guitar, but determined to play it, Brendan just taught himself upside down, and continues to play that way. It was also around this time Brendan figured out he could rap/sing and play the drums at the same time…Throughout this whole time Brendan had performed at many random events…other mc’s shows, other bands shows, his house, others houses, parties, and he even got a Halloween show shut down at Montgomery College because he got the crowd too riled up and loud…Brendan’s music continued to progress and in 2005, He met guitarist David Dunning and bassist Chris Sandler and knew immediately they were supposed to be his band. The three of them began to play constantly, and while learning Brendan’s solo songs, they also started writing songs as a band…while the three of them continued to push musical limits, Brendan was also working on his 4th solo CD entitled ‘Ouch’… Brendan created this CD completely alone using an old computer, two computer mics, his upside down guitar, drums and a toy keyboard as well as saving and paying for it to be pressed, and distributed by himself as well…. Brendan Taylor is a crazy bastard who will stop at nothing to destroy his "VH1 behind the music that never even happened yet" life...meaning do something with his talents...holler
Do you play live?
I think the weirdest show i ever did was a hip hop set at a womens football game-the washington Divas...i did 3 songs and got paid 20 bucks!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think people still need to eat, and if you steal my music, its like stealing my food so i'll kill you.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Sure, but i wouldnt compromise my musical integrity...
