Tragik has been performing their brand of aggressive indie-rock from Washington D.C. to Boston for the past three years. “Tragik” is comprised of Ken Hylind (vocals, guitars, lyricist), Bill Carpenter (bass), Mike Giangiulio (guitar), and Johnny Smith (Drums).
Why this name?
Tragik started for me (Ken) in the late 80’s. At the time I was really into art and hip-hop. The name then was Tragik Magik which was a graffiti signature I would use in wall murals. My obsession with hip-hop led to Djing, which lead to rapping, which all somehow lead me to writing songs. All of this didn’t really become realized until I graduated high school and studied art at Bucks. The professors there encouraged me to think “outside the box.” This, in turn, influenced me to exercise all of my creativity, which is really when I picked up guitar and keyboard. It really gave me a clear pursuit I writing lyrics. It was a struggle to find the right people and get it going, but these three musicians are amazing talents and have helped me make Tragik into one of the strongest up and coming regional acts.
Do you play live?
I am proud to say that we are not just a CD band. Bill, Mike and Johnny have helped me forge this into an intense live show. And actually go way beyond anything we could get on tape. We’ve been asked “Where do you get all that energy from?” I always answer, “from you.”
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's really about the performances, and the long term attachment to the artist. Nobody is going to spend money or come out to a show without calling something their own. I think downloading is a great way to promote. I currently have over 10 full-length mp3 downloads posted on our site, and they have proven to be a great tool.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes!
Your influences?
Well, besides the obvious ones like Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and other classic rockers that everyone has been influenced by, I’ve drawn on a lot of old school hip-hop for tempos and rhythms. It’s hard to put a finger on it, but I wouldn’t want to anyway.
