The Word Engineer has been spitting spoken word in ears for many years under the guise of improving consciousness. His words can be felt traveling the neurons of the cosmic inner self. Is that hype or what? He's simply a man doing what he loves to do, teach and entertain!
Why this name?
The Word Engineer was part of the opening line for the Sankofa Seeds radio ("Pumpin' brain cells into the air--it's the word engineer!...")show produced for three years in Little Rock, Arkansas on KABF 88.3 FM the voice of the people. I design my poems with exactness and peak expression.
Do you play live?
No. I produce audio tracks for my spoken word utilizing guitars, keyboards, drums or whatever I have available to lay it out. I only peform my spoken word live with the music pre-recorded.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
This question if answered off the top of my head would be "drastically", however, MP3 has allowed the average Joe to produce sellable versions of their work to a greater international mass online. I don't think the music industry's are acting swiftly enough to re-corner the market. A certain black hole exist for the major companies just as it does for their loss on the street corners to illegal duplication and sales of CDs and DVDs. You can't stop that rain from pouring, however, they could gravitate towards providing entire CDs in MP3 version. In a nut shell it has caused the major companies to step up their game because the masses are hungry and they cannot feed everyone--so here we are feeding ourselves. Let me stop here.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes. Why not take advantage of a deal for a few years to help establish my self on a higher plane. Why not take advantage of mass media, distribution, and video opportunities?
Band History:
I have been writing and publishing my works in book form since 1994. I did not publish my first audio until around 1998, but I have been on the air since 1997, and on the streets prior to that time period at open mic and other performances.
Your influences?
I am old school. I like P-Funk, Rick James, but I do enjoy a mix of modern hip-hop, rock, too. You cannot top One Nation Under the Groove or Nirvana in my book--it's classic! When I lay out tracks for my spoken word the music is a spin on the emotions of my words so there is no telling what flavor will arise until it's recorded.
Favorite spot?
I have been to many cities here in the U.S. and around the world in England, Germany, Italy, Korea, Africa, Canada, Belgium, France. I can't tell you which one is my favorite. I have a favorite spot every where I go.
Anything else...?
