A comedy rock band that specializes in song parodies. Our biggest influence are The Cars. Our other major influence is of course, Weird Al Yankovic. We also do original songs yet we try our best to not take ourselves seriously.
Why this name?
David's musical idol is Benjamin Orr (bassist/lead singer of The Cars) so the name ORR was changed to OAR to pay homage to Ben Orr and his legacy of music he left behind. Plus it's also indulges in symbolism by saying that to get a boat moving you need BOTH OARS to get it going, and to get our band going you have to have both of us producing something with density.
Do you play live?
Not at the moment. Just starting out so hopefully there will be some live dates in the future.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think MP3's are a necessity amongst music fans because it makes everything so much easier to access. Without it, unknown artists wouldn't be able to get their music out there. And that underground music is usually the best. It lacks the studio quality however there are still creativity and substance. And there are also no production flourishes and sell outs with unsigned bands.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Of course. But I wouldn't compromise any of my original ideas or beliefs just because a COMPANY tells me to. If they wanted to stick me with a gimmick and program me (a la redundant pop stars like Eminem, Britney Spears, etc.) I'd walk. Sign me for my music, let me do that part at least. No outside help.
Band History:
The Oars started when David Heline Jr. began to tinker with a guitar. When he started to learn how to play he enlisted help from his brother Steven and together they would come up with parodies off the tops of their heads. David then purchased a computer studio and began to write down some of his parodies and original songs. Together they began to record each song...one by one...and here they are today.
Your influences?
The Cars are our biggest influence. The greatest band...EVER. Prince, The Cure, Weird Al Yankovic and just about any good 80's song. The 80's are a huge influence on our band.
Favorite spot?
Anywhere involving women.
Equipment used:
An acoustic guitar, a cheap keyboard, usually our bodies to make percussion sounds, and computer technology to program certain parts to songs.
