I'm a solo DJ from upstate NY producing beats out of my attic. I got into remixing about a year ago based almost exclusively on the fact that there just aren't very many mc's to work with around here, and I wanted to hear my beats with vocals laid over them. It's definitely helped me learn alot about djing and production.
Why this name?
I don't really have a band name so to speak, rather a simple moniker (PSX) that I've had for years. Don't ask what it stands for cuz the answer always changes. My current favorite is Pink Slip eXtraordinaire.
Do you play live?
I haven't played anywhere lately. I sometimes jump in with a localreggae band but they've sort of disbanded. Before that, I backed a few mc's.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's a tough call. On one hand, as an artist it gives you an unlimited distribution channel for practically nothing, aside from the time it takes to promote yourself. On the other, the sea is boundless and full of talent (and some not so talented), so self promotion can get pretty intense trying to make yourself stand out.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
That's a tough call. It's all about the bling right? ;) I really don't know. I think I need a lawyer to answer that question. I'd probably go with an indie label or if music provided the funds, start my own.
Your influences?
Hmm.. if I had to make a list it'd go something like this... Beastie Boys, Premier (sick production), GFE, Del, Dre, some of Eminem's stuff, Nas, Wu, J5, NWA, Ghetto Boys, Dilated, Jedi Mind Tricks.. mostly oldish hip hop with a touch of gangsta.
Favorite spot?
The woods.
Equipment used:
Apple Powerbook loaded with Reason, Recycle and Audicity. Reason controlled by an m-audio keyboard. 2 Stanton turntables, a mixer and a steadily growing vinyl collection. Everything piped through a dj amp with some big-ass speakers.
