NEWS
mastabeta is enjoying being out of the safe house. It sure is bright out here so I don't know if I'll relish this freedom for too much longer. The caves, as I call them, are kinder to the soul, but enjoy the new tracks. This and You Tube are my only web presence so if you see a Mastabeta elsewhere and the words Uncle Scam Clique are missing... it's not me, but make sure you respect those people too.

Honest rap. Anybody in a pink jumpsuit need not apply, unless of course you are man enough to wear it without checking with your friends every ten minutes.

Why this name?
I think it birthed itself out of another lyric. These things happen. Also, Morrissey was already taken.
Do you play live?

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
You can't be on a mixtape everyday and it's nice to be able to self promote. I've heard alot of pretty dope stuff on the internet. I discovered that there were cats out there that are incredibly talented who didn't have a deal or any serious promotion. As a music lover, this is the equivalent of striking gold. Besides...at the moment, there isn't much going on in terms of celebrated rappers. I'm old. I don't think hip hop should be the way it is right now, but it's not a point I care to argue anymore. At least with this computer you can choose who you want to listen to and not have to be bombarded by the same 10 songs all day every day. One last thing...don't be mistaken by making the assumption that the internet doesn't have a lot of terrible music on it. It does, but sometimes when you look in the garbage you find something that you can actually use.
Peace,
mastabeta
for that matter.
UPDATE: It's 2010 and I feel exactly the same way.

Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Who knows? Does anybody even like me? Here's a funny story: About two years ago I had a run in with Russell Simmons and called him a dick to his face. Why? Because he dropped his Drivers ID on the floor at my job, and when I tried to give it back, homeboy "shooed" me away. Shooed????
Anyway, I still tried to make him understand, but he was so high on himself that he never made eye contact with me and acted like I was some crazed fan by ignoring me and calling for his driver. So I lost it....his driver got a kick out of it. He gave me a pound and as they drove off, I had a cigarette in New York City. It's a major war crime that he personally blocked EL P from using Def Jux and forced him to label it as Definitive. Either way, it sounds cool, but let's be honest... Def Jam hasn't really done anything for the people who heralded it upon start up in a dog's age.

Band History:
Me and FLIP made a record. It's doper than yours.
He's my brother. He has children and a wife.
His beats are great and one time...a really long time ago...these kids dared him to drop in on a mini ramp. He wasn't a ramp kind of guy, but if he did it, the dude who dared him told him that if he had the balls to do it, he'd give Flip a Variflex vert board. (Don't laugh...Variflex had dope vert boards back then) Anyway, Flips deck was robbed. The thing had two inches of tail. Flip went to the top and put his skateboard in the drop in position...homeboy did it!!! He actually did it!!!
The celebration didn't last...he lost his balance by the time he got to the flat and he fell back doing 90. He hit the ground and the whole ramp shook. (note: it was six foot and mad solid) Everybody stopped talking and we all ran over to him. His eyes were bulged out and he gasped for air for ten minutes. After it was all over, we laughed, but Flip was sore because he didn't get to ride home on a new board.
Then... I got married, moved to Los Angeles, had twins, became a professional, and made love with my first love: Rock N' Roll.
A decade later I'm back and since things haven't changed I made more songs.

Your influences?
I like a lot of groups, but I'm not sure if I can say that they influenced me. I mean...I don't play guitar like Jack White. In fact, I don't even play a guitar. Not good anyway, but I'm learning.
Hip Hop wise? I only listen to the same bunch of guys that were poppin' in the 90's... Black Moon, Co Flow, MF, Atmosphere... (but don't tell any of those cats that I can't dig their new stuff.) Qwel however is still bringing heat. Doomalay is too, but that's a given.

Favorite spot?
Well...I love being in the arms of my wife and the feeling I get when I breathe isn't too tough either... I'd have to say my favorite spot is LA right now... I'm older and it's far less busy than NYC. I can ride my bike and not worry about terrorism... for now at least. Still, NY is a great city. I loved it for a long time. Would I move back? No, but that's only because I've had all the sex I need to satisfy me.
