Why this name?
In Swedish it's Black Village. It's a village, in our concern, where all the evil secret magic folks live (goblins, witches, dwarves etc.) who hate humans and cause troubles for them
Do you play live?
We yet play in our native city. People appreciate our shows though we had few gigs yet. We've warmed up Cruachan on 28.10.2005 and a gig with Ensiferum (Finland) is coming on 29.01.2006. Sure we like it!! Scene is the place we were born for!!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's faster and easier to exchange music...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Not yet, but we'll do in September when the album being recorded now will be mastered.
Band History:
Svartby
We are a band from St. Petersburg, Russia. The band was formed in June 2004 (i.e. last year) after guitar player (Lindwurm) and bassist (Giftsvamp) quitted brutal death band Nordlicht. It was not possible to develop musically there, so we decided to create something where styles can be mixed and all the members of the band could participate in creation of music (in Nordlicht it was only one member who did it, so... 2 new songs for 2 years isn’t enough, eh?).
By the time we quitted Nordlicht, we’ve already had several themes on keyboards, and lyrics were written already. In autumn 2004 the band was completed with bassist-singer, the 2nd guitar player and drummer. After ½ year of rehearsals we have recorded a demo of 6 songs that are presented here. We have not yet got any negative appraisals from those who had heard it, but of course it’s up to you to make your opinion about it.
The first show Svartby has played in club Arctica, St.Petersburg, on 5.06.2005. Since that we've played several gigs and crave for more!! (public - too :) Recently our guitar player Hemskalf quitted Svartby and got busy with his thrash project. We say farewell to the clean vocals with this too. But we greet a new member, Hök, now! He showed up at the recent gig and kicked ass as a stage musician and a guitarist also..
Now we’re recording our debut album (which is conceptual to some extent; every song’s a little black-humor story about a witch). Actually the next album is practically ready.

Your influences?
Folk, black, death and thrash metal influenced us. The most related is Finntroll though they are more folk and we're more fairy-tale metal. And all sorts of fairy movie and cartoon soundtracks
Favorite spot?
Native Saint-Petersburg and Scandinavian countries
