Tom Travis and the Bluegrass Incident
Tom Travis is a UK bluegrass music pioneer. During his forty-years-plus in the music, Tom has been involved in all its aspects including success in the Tom & Smiley duo throughout the 1960's, with large international album sales; regular radio and TV appearances; extensive touring and a long period in charge of the Edale Bluegrass Festival, the largest of its type outside America. In addition to the popular BBC Radio 2 series Bluegrass Ramble, Tom has also written and presented other features on bluegrass music for that same station.
Tom is a founder member of the British Bluegrass Music Association and served as its Chairman for six years. He has performed on stage with many top American bluegrass stars, is a songwriter and currently performs and records with his band "The Bluegrass Incident". A track from their latest Album A Small Patch of Blue, on the Proper Label, has recently made No1 in two European Radio Top 40 Charts.
The musicians in Tom’s band are acknowledged as some of the best in bluegrass, so anyone into virtuoso banjo, fiddle and mandolin, with high lonesome singing is in for a treat. America’s Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine said of Tom’s new album, ‘A Small Patch of Blue,’ “the instrumental work is flawless; it’s truly original and a goldmine of entertainment.”

Why this name?
Because we got together, initially, for one gig only but we enjoyed the experience so much that from what should have been a one-off 'incident' we got ourselves a band.
Do you play live?
Yes, mostly throughout the UK, in clubs, theatres and at festivals
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Having been in the music business for many years, It is great to have direct access to the world, for our music. When I(Tom Travis) started out, no such facilty existed. These are exciting times for musicians.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, as long as we were allowed artistic freedom. We write, play and sing the music because we love it and create because that is what we do. If asked to record music for commercial reasons, which we did not enjoy, we would choose artistic freedom against monetary gain.
Band History:
Tom Travis has been a bluegrass band leader since 1981, in fact the first band he played in as a member was The Double 'T' Ramblers in 1962. between 1964 and 1971 Tom was a partner in the successful bluegrass duo Tom & Smiley. Over the period, since forming his own band, many very talented musicians have passed through it as members. Up until 1995, his band was called 'The Tom Travis Bluegrass Band'. In that year, Tom took a break from performing to concentrate on his bluegrass promotional work with the British Bluegrass Music Association. On stepping down from its chairmanship in 2003, he returned to writing, performing and recording with a brand new band, 'The Bluegrass Incident'. Current members beside guitarist/singer Tom are: Bill Forster - 5-String Banjo; Bob Winquist - Fiddle; Dave Howard - Mandolin and Hugh Bradley - Double Bass.
Tom maintains that the present line-up is the best he has ever had.
