The Burkes come from a small Southeastern coal town known as Neon in Letcher County, Kentucky. We have traveled and sung around the area for almost 40 years, and have ministered to many people along the way. The group consists of Tony Burke, who performs rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Tony's wife Sondra, who sings alto and lead vocals, and their son Joe who performs piano, lead and alto vocals. The Burkes have released nationally with Kevin Spencer Radio Service Volume VII, and have wrote many songs, some of which can be found on their recordings.
Why this name?
The Burkes has been a family Southern Gospel name in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky since back in the early 70's. We are the second generation of the family to carry on the gospel music tradition.
Do you play live?
Being in a gospel ministry, we travel and sing live in churches all over the tri-state area. We really enjoy meeting new people, performing at different churches and events, and the fun of being on the road.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's allowed small town folk like ourselves to have a voice not only in our country, but in the world. Before the world of digital music, we could record a project, and only those within our hometown and surrounding areas would know about it. Now, we can promote ourselves to a whole new medium of people, and reach others we would otherwise have no contact with.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If we were ever discovered by the right group, of course. We aren't doing this to make a name for ourselves though, rather uplift Christ and to win lost souls. I think signing onto a label would be a major stepping stone for us, allowing us to branch out even farther. But, it's God's will, not ours.
Band History:
The group started out with founders Bill and Brenda Burke back in the early 70's. Bill Burke pastored many churches in Pike and Floyd Counties, and sung in original group. Brenda provided lead vocals. Their first son, Tony, joined as a teenager and added guitar, lead and alto vocals. The Burke Family traveled all over the region during the 70's and 80's singing and ministering to countless churches.

In 1978, Tony married and continued on the family tradition. The Singing Burkes were formed in the early 80's and Tony, along with wife Sondra recorded their first 2 song demo together in Cincinnati Ohio. Years later, the son of Tony and Sondra, Joe, joined the group and added his own style of singing and piano. In the mid 90's, Tony, Sondra and Joe began recording their own projects and continuing on with the family name.
