We all seek a unique way to express ourselves, and that search starts when we are very young. I've had a stammer all my life, and this song is also about the little boy who was at first surprised, then frustrated, and later debilitated by his inability to communicate what he had in his head. Though it's about 45 years since I first realised something was wrong I still haven't conquered it, and the little boy is still inside me asking for help and forgiveness (though for what I don't know). A bouncy Brian Delaney drum loop drives it along, while the most fluent voice I do have - bass guitar - provides a flowing, uninhibited line throughout; two acoustic guitar tracks (capo at third fret), piano, synthy strings, single lead vocal with up to twelve harmonies, and a bottle-neck guitar line finish it off.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Inside me is the boy
Who always had the words to say,
But couldn't say them anyway:
Dressed in silence.

And then as he grew
He found he had a point of view,
And sometimes all the answers too;
But kept his silence.

I sometimes have a dream - I scream
But no-one hears me...

Chorus
I'm still looking for my voice,
Always searching for my voice.

Verse 2
Spinning in my head
All I've thought and seen and heard,
Looking for the magic word
To break the silence.

So I act like a fool
'Cos that's what you expect of me;
Through my eyes you'll never see
What I could be...

I sometimes have a dream - I break free
And everyone listens to me.

Chorus
I'm still looking for my voice,
Always searching for my voice.

Middle 8
Sitting on my shoulders
An angel and a devil;
Gets hard, as I grow older,
To keep the spirits level.

Verse 3
Inside me still the boy
Who never learned to speak the truth
About who he is, and how he feels...
Please forgive me...

Chorus
I'm still looking for my voice,
Always searching for my voice.
I'm still looking for my voice,
Always searching for my voice.

I'm still looking...
