Emergency Red are a fast-rising, Edinburgh-based indie rock/pop band who have been gigging for about a year now.
Why this name?
To be honest, it's made up. We all like the colour red, Emergency red sounds like a shade of red, but it's a term we made up - we thought it sounded kind of urgent and emotive - like we want the music to be. Before, we were Polar, Diesl, Limur, Born Tomorrow, and Motocrash, although the only other name we had for any length of time was Polar.
Do you play live?
Our first gig and first love was La Belle Angele in Edinburgh, now sadly burned down in the recent fire. Other regular spots include the Venue in Edinburgh, which has been graced by bands as diverse as Oasis and Nirvana over the years, and the Commplex in Leith, which has fantastic acoustics (being a converted church) and a huge artists' area, to make you feel a bit 'special'
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
For the better, in terms of getting your music exposed to more people, although it does devalue any EP CDs you're putting out if your fans already have one or two of the tracks
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Absolutely - if it's not about the money (which it isn't, although a living would be nice) then it's about letting people hear your music. A deal with a major label would generally make it easier for people to hear you. Stories like Mogwai are the exception, rather than the rule.
Band History:
Highlights to date include supporting metal/punk outfit Cyclefly, and New York garage rockers, Longwave, fresh from their European Tour with the Vines. Other highlights include extensive radioplay on Edinburgh & Glasgow station Beat 106, and having an entire gig broadcast on cable TV fom Princes Street Gardens during the last Edinburgh festival.
ER now have interest from 2 labels - we obviously can't give more details just now, but no bullshit, it's there.

Your influences?
Radiohead, Coldplay, Lou Reed, The Clash, Muse, Echo & the Bunnymen, Feeder, and just for a bit of ammunition, Blink 182, Linkin Park, and Michael Jackson (Bring it on)
Favorite spot?
Can't speak for the other two, but Cal's favourite place has been Chichen Itza (don't know if the spelling's up to much, but the real name's in pictograms anyway) - on top of the pyramid, looking out over the Mexican jungle
Equipment used:
Fender USA Strat, Rickenbacker 4001 bass, Pearl Export drums, Hohner 'The Jack' Bass, various pedals, including Marshall Jackhammer, Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Wah, Digitech Bass synth wah, Ibanez Phat Hed Bass overdrive, and a couple of Roland distortion type guitar pedals (give me a break, I'm a Bassist - one's yellow, one's light blue))
Anything else...?
Just a few String samples on Closer
