I'm Sonja V is a lanky short-haired girl from the west side of a little town called Sydney. She can be seen running around and around in circles on the spot... usually somewhere between the Blue Mountains and Sydney. I play bass both live and in studios for a few groovy artists, and I also dapple in a little lo-fi home recording on the side just for extra kicks, which is what you can hear here.

This page is basically a snapshot of some of the works Sonja V has created between 2003 - present, in rough chronological order. Lets call it a diary of her musical journey, just sound extra art wanky ;-)

I guess for me listening back to this stuff really is a testament to hard work and practise. And I don't mean that in a concieted way. Just listening to the stuff at the bottom of the list then moving to the more recent stuff at the top and you'll see what I mean. I've gotten muuuuuch muuuuch better over the years, and it kinda feels good. I hope that in a few years when I listen to the stuff I've done now I can say the same thing. ;-)

peace

Why this name?
I owe my gratitude to Mummy and Daddy...
Do you play live?
Yes. Mostly as a bass player.

Hmm special moments. Well, I fell off the stage once...

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Two major things to consider:

New opportunities for exposure available to every type of artist, major, indie, unsigned and even the hobbyist.

More opportunity translates into more competition. How does the little known bedroom artist get people to "check my shit" over the other gazillion artists on myspace?
Band History:
I've been in a few
Your influences?
Peter Garret's dance moves, Bjork, Jeff Buckley, Ember Swift, Gretta Cohen, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jonne Donne, Janis Ian, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Ember Swift, Lyndell Montgomery, RATM, Mike Patton, Spearhead, Paul Simon, Tim Freedman, Fiona Apple, King Crimson, Caffene, Sugar, Erykah Badu, Jeff Lang, Aphex Twin, Goldie, Jethro Tull, Michael Stipe Led Zepplin, Debussy, Erik Satie and three square meals a day...
Equipment used:
Lots

Ok... I use a variety of axes including old jap basses, strats, superstrats, matons, handbuilt acoustics and a cheap yellow ukelele.

For bass amplification I use Eden Heads and Trace Elliot Cabs. Geetar amps used include Marshall, Line 6, and Laney.

I also occasionally whip out an electric organ.

I record everything at home using cubase in a small room with shitty acoustics and equally shitty mics. To compensate, the room is filled with mattresses in order to create a little deadness. I then use plug ins to treat the hell out of the tracks and add some artificial space.

I use reason to program synths etc.

Anything else...?
