*TOO ABSTRACT FOR THE HOOD, TOO HOOD FOR THE BACKPACK KIDS*

Your FAVORITE conglomerate of indie hip-hop artists EVER
(keep repeating to yourself)
Why this name?
SpaceLAB Records was named after our studio where we space the f*ck out and make music.

As for individual names, Jak D drinks waaaay too much Jak Daniels whiskey, Jake Palumbo was going to have been my porn name, and DJ V-Cut uses lots of Valium (V-cuts).
Do you play live?
Pretty often, both locally and on the road. Live shows and touring are a vital part of SpaceLAB's music. We put out an underground VHS called "Hood Tactics" that documents some of our childish antics during and before/after shows.

We've played over 50 self-booked/promoted headlining shows this year (2005), plus opening slots for Young Buck of G-Unit, Cappadonna, Afroman, Icon the Mic King, Three 6 Mafia, Fiend (formerly No Limit) Psyche Origami, OneBeLo, A.W.O.L. One, ShapeShifters and Jamario of Def Comedy Jam/Comic View. We've entertained crowds in Tennessee, North & South Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, St. Louis MO, Jacksonville FL, New York City and Chicago, IL.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Mostly, I feel the internet has been a good thing within the music industry. It has allowed alot of good music to get exposed to potential fans - music that probably would have been shelved or poorly promoted had it been in the hands of a major label. Plus it's a much more effective form of media, it does the job fanzines once did just on a wider scale.

The downside has been that it has given a voice for alot of little sh*theads to pretend they have cutting-edge music and a huge following. It's easy to say you've got the hottest sh*t in the game when you're behind a f**king computer. Go prove it in the real world! (This trend is especially rampant in hip-hop right now).

Before the internet, to perpetrate yourself as an artist or band "on the up and coming", you had to

1) actually make music with others,
2) record it somwhere, and then
3) either play live in front of real people or hustle your demo hand-to-hand and make fans the old-fashioned way.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If the check is big enough and they promise I can have sex with Kelly Clarkson
Favorite spot?
Brooklyn, NY is kind of my second home. Jak D is fond of the Carolinas.
