Why this name?
"Underwire" is the term used to describe those annoying, painful devices some person decided to stuff into bras. But we just like the words "under" and "wire" as it pertains to a rock band! Ok, ok, I guess I did want to imply that there is a strong female energy to this band. That can't be denied!
Do you play live?
We just started playing live in September, so we haven't gotten around to playing a lot of places yet. Just a few clubs in Toronto, once in Hamilton and I've (Esma) played some other places when Underwire was still my solo project. We're probably going to play in Rochester, NY in the spring, and hopefully do some more out-of-town dates.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, the internet is a big resource for indie bands. I built a fan base long before I recorded or played live, just by spending time on the net networking. Being able to upload songs is such a big help for bands to get their music out there for very little money.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would, but only if they realized that things have changed and it's not like how it used to be, where bands "needed" a label to get their music out there. We don't need them anymore. Just look at Ani DeFranco. She is so successful, and she didn't need any major label to get there. It just goes to show that we can all do it ourselves. So, the major labels better realize that and start treating us with respect. I would only sign with a label that had our best interests in mind, and wanted to make a fair deal. I don't see anything wrong with signing to a major as long as it's a win-win situation.
Band History:
* Underwire was formed in the summer of 2000 by guitarist/songwriter Esma.
* I (Esma) searched long and hard for the right musicians for this band. Underwire went through a few member changes and spent some time as a solo project before Matt Coverly joined in on drums in Sept/02 and Edgar LeBel joined in on bass in Oct/02.
* In May of 2000, Underwire recorded a 5-song demo CD. We are planning on recording a full-length album in the fall of 2003.

Favorite spot?
Well I haven't seen it all! I think Fiji or Tahiti would be nice. But out of all the places I did see, I'd have to say Amsterdam is my favourite!
