Band History:
Bio of The Skies

The Skies embody a sound that has been described as dreamy rock with a sultry flavor, combining influences from previously successful female vocalists with original song structures and rhythms. This is their story.

HISTORY

The year 2003 marked the beginning of their collaboration.

Montreal natives Evan Stassinos, Katherin Vasilopoulos and Jeff Swinwood played in a cover band fronted by a female lead vocalist. Evan guitared, Katherin harmonized and Jeff drummed. The band quickly fell apart following the departure of the lead vocalist and the bassist.

Evan picked up the pieces and recruited new musicians in an attempt to create a new sound. And he did.

BAND MEMBERS

During the recruitment process, Evan developed riffs and lyrics for original songs. Recordings in his home setup were flourishing. He also picked up the bass and played it left-handed. His growing interest in musical composition and digital audio were the driving forces behind his creations. Influences include Ben Harper and Jack Johnson.

Katherin stepped in as lead vocalist. Her voice and style have been compared to the sultry likes of Dido and Sade, but with the power of Grace Slick and Sinead O’Connor. She provided the vocal tracks for Evan’s recordings and brought to life the ideas he generated.

Jeff came from a diverse background having played in many bands in the past. His influences include a diverse array of artists from Godsmack and System of a Down, to the Police. He added his distinct blend of drums and percussion accents to Evan's originals.

Together they produced Chicago*, a song about leaving behind a past to face a better future, and The Here and Now, a song about refusing to conform to relationship ideals and just living for the moment. These songs are posted on this site. *Chicago lyrics written by long-time friend George Kalogeris and enhanced by Evan and Katherin.

In early summer 2004, singer/songwriter Chris Kalbfleisch joined the band, bringing with him original songs and a fresh new guitar sound. Prior to his joining, Chris had developed Thank You Love --among other songs-- and together with his new band mates, updated and re-mixed this song digitally. This song is about being grateful when another forgives you for not being perfect. It is posted on this site.

The band met once a week the entire summer, fall and winter of that year. Their set list grew with original songs and covers that showcased each member’s skills. They yielded more new sounds when Katherin introduced keyboards into the equation.

In spring of 2005, Chris took a step back, and Mike Chun joined in. Mike brought a jazzy, sophisticated sound that was supported by classical training. The advent of his arrival focused the formation toward a more lounge, relaxed style.

FUTURE DIRECTION

Today, the Skies are still innovating and generating class-act pieces. Future plans include live performances and the continued creation of original digital recordings. Their sound is worth following, so stay tuned for more creative pieces.
