Wonderland Dementation Dept. is a Swedish hard rocking crew with members from the critically acclaimed underground hardcore band Belltown and Misconduct. With a back-to-basics sound, snappy arrangements and a bunch of generally weird ideas, Wonderland Dementation Dept. combines heaviness, aggression and melody into a distinct sound of their own.
Why this name?
A result of the great book "Alice In Wonderland", which in many ways could be likened to the current state of the world today, (sick and twisted).
Do you play live?
We sure are. Mainly around Sweden, but we're looking forward to play everyones toilet very soon.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, for starters it's only improving for everyone. People getting more open minded as they get the chance to hear more music they normaly wouldn't listen to. When the music industry understand (well I already think they do they just wont accept it) how simple and genius it is to promote music the whole debate will die. But this surely take about 20 years till their next threat comes.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes we would. If the contract is gaining us as a band and if the suits could convince us that what they say is at least 50% true.
Band History:
The story began in 1997 when Christian and Daniel along with drummer Damir Bandic started to play melodic post-hardcore as BELLTOWN. After five years of ups and downs and the release of the bands debut EP things had come to a critical point. Stuck in pointless label negotiations, a cancelled tour added frustration on an increasing creative tension that led the band to split up in autumn of 2001.
When suddenly a lot of spare time appeared the three individuals hooked up with longtime friend Jonas Olander for some jamming. Jonas had a bunch of riffs waiting to be tried out and soon pieces started to fall into place by themselves. A band was a reality again, the WONDERLAND DEMENTATION DEPT.
With a new spark of creativity fueling the band WDD combined melody, hardcore aggression with heavy grooves. Within a few months WONDERLAND DEMENTATION DEPT. had made their live debut in Stockholm and began to record the Low Budget, Self-Titled Debut EP. During the following year the band played more live shows, and more songs emerged from the DEPT. as a distinct sound began to emerge. With Daniel now focusing on the vocal efforts, the lyrics continued to develop even more into political subject matter of war, imperialism, racism and class struggle. Inspiration for such lyrics was unfortunately very easy to find in the world after September 11th and the new era of global military politics that followed.
In early spring of 2003 the DEPT. made plans for a full length album, The Awkward Silence. Weary of broken promises and general bull from the music industry the band decided for a strict Do It Yourself policy. Prerecordings began in March with four new songs, which were followed in early summer with another six. But when summer reached an end it was clear that the commitment to the band and the upcoming album had taken its toll on the members. Not everyone could contribute the time required for the band. After discussions in late August, Damir and Jonas left the WONDERLAND DEMENTATION DEPT. agreeing that it would be for the best for all concerned parties.
Daniel and Christian began to search for replacement members and with a great dose of luck they met drummer Niklas Sandell to fill the vacant slot as rhythmic noisemaker. Christian also called a friend from school, Fredrik Andersson, with guitar experience from hardcore unit MISCONDUCT with an offer he couldn’t refuse. In mid-September the DEPT. was functional again, with even more energy and determination than before.
With the new line-up new songs suddenly came together while older ones turned out quite different. The plan for the upcoming album was a reality again as the hardest, loudest and most energetic incarnation of the WONDERLAND DEMENTATION DEPT. looked into the future.
