Indie-rock band the Dardanelles started their music career by staging sold out headline shows in Cork, as well as playing support to well known Irish bands the Hothouse Flowers, Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, Joe Chester and Autamata amongst others. Live, the band showcase their memorable melodies and insightful lyrics with the addition of violin and clarinet, creating an urgency and dynamic rarely found elsewhere.
Why this name?
The Dardanelles, formerly Hellespont, is a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
Just like the Bosporus strait, it separates Europe (in this case the Gallipoli peninsula) and the mainland of Asia.
The strait has long had a strategic role in history. The Persian army of Xerxes I and later the Macedonian army of Alexander the Great crossed the Dardanelles in opposite directions to invade each other's lands.
As a result of the straits being vital for the Ottoman's domination over their eastern Mediterranean dominion, the Allies made a failed attempt to seize the Dardanelles during World War I (the battle was officially declared lost on March 18, 1915); the high number of casualties from this battle almost ended the career of Winston Churchill.

Do you play live?
yes,so far we've only played in Cork, but that will be changing soon.Oh we love playing live, it's our speciality as we're a live music band.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Too much illegal downloading could be the ruination of the music industry as we know it, then again, it's not in a great state anyway. But it is helpful to download tracks (like here) when you dont know the band/artist and is very beneficial to independent artists.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
yes.
Band History:
Since their birth in the summer of 2004 Cork band the Dardanelles have become one of the county's most
promising acts. With members from both East and West Cork brought together in Colaiste Stiofain Naofa's Music
Production course, a band was formed by the sharing of the same musical ideology and goals. The band
weren't long shaping their craft and finetuning their anthemic indie-rock tunes. The band have already received
local press, the much coveted airplay and a hard - working reputation as well as being subject to death threats
through their own website.
Fronted by Cathal Geary (winner of the Murphy's UnCorked Singer Songwriter Competition), the band's
dynamics are far from limited with Kevin Waugh alternating between guitar and keyboards, David Cooney on
bass and Ronan Cooney on drums. The addition of Grace Cott on violin and vocals and Elma Lahimh on
clarinet ensures a rich texture of sounds that make the movement from edgy guitar rock to introspective,
emotionally charged slow songs effortless to this band.
Indeed the songs have already earned both Cathal Geary and the Dardanelles the right to share the stage with
well respected acts as such as Jerry Fish & the Mudbug Club, Hothouse Flowers, Autamata, as well as
top pedigree local acts. To follow, the band have also staged their own headline shows in Cyprus Avenue,
Cork, to large crowds that were more than receptive to the band’s exhilarating live performance. The band are
also set to repeat their local success across the country in the coming months when they venture outside of
Cork to take to the stage in some of the country's most respected venues.
The Dardanelles are not just about the art of song writing however but the sound created within the songs.
Memorable melodies, effective guitar and piano riffs, accompanied by the depth of violin and clarinet, gives the
Dardanelles an exciting urgency that you will struggle to find anywhere else. Songs drawn from the heart like
Murder Me, Dreaming of Ghosts and Horses For Courses have so far proven to be live favourites that
delightfully exhibit the raw talent and song scope of the Dardanelles. They are a precise combination of
intelligent music and insightful lyrics that makes them refreshingly incisive and memorable.
