Bopping to a new rhythm.
Combining improvisational jazz, traditional ethnic sounds, spoken word and visual art, the Neo-Ancestralists are a truly unique force in local music.
Watching a group of musicians preparing to perform is always interesting, especially when they're getting ready to improvise, as the last boppers were about to do at the rehearsal session I attended. I watched as each musician silently prepared himself and his instrument. It was then that I realized what a personal experience music is, even when performed by a group. one by one the boppers began to prepare and tune their instruments producing dissonant tones and rhythms that slowly began, without direction.
to coalesce into a single theme. It was latin at first, low and smooth like a lazy summer night. then it picked up momentum, brightening into the rolling anthem of a cross country road trip. a traditional jazz sound came through in the trumpet and deep bass guitar, but woven in were rhythms and beats, that were rooted in something far more ancient. As the jam progressed, the musicians occasionally dipped into their musical bag of tricks, pulling out bells, chimes, drums and anything else from which they could produce the sounds they needed their progression reached a crescendo as the room nearly burst with a complex, shifting African beat that was primal and modern at the same time
