Why this name?
We didn't really choose it ourselves. We started performing, and just used our full names at first, but then as people began to know who we were they started calling us Ash & Zack. It sounded good to us, so we stuck with it.
Do you play live?
Yes we play live as much as we can. We play mostly around the Keene New Hampshire area, but in other places all around New England including gigs in Maine, and many in Vermont. WE LOVE IT!!! performing is one of the things we love most about the whole music experience.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet changes the industry in a lot of ways, too many to count. It's great for this sort of thing, i.e. getting started and getting your music to as many people as possible on your own, but if you're out to make money it is probably pretty damaging. But it is all about the music not the money anyway.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Absolutely. It is still the easiest and best way to get your music to as many people as possible. It allows you to focus more on the art and less on marketing and managing yourself etc. But we've done some homework and we wouldn't sign just anything we'd have to get a decent deal with creative control and ownership of our songs.
Band History:
The group-
Ashley Arnott (Vocals, Piano) , of Holliston Massachusetts, and Zack Knauer (Guitar, Vocals), of Hydeville Vermont met as freshmen at Keene State College in Keene New Hampshire. They were introduced through a mutual friend, and began hanging out and occaisionally played music together. For fun they wrote a song together and performed a few times together at open mic nights. From there they became more and more involved in the music and developed a reputation around campus. Since then they have spread their music beyond the college campus into the Keene area and elsewhere.
The Music-
Ash & Zack's music has been described in many ways. This can be attributed to their many influences. Both Ash and Zack love all types of music and bits and pieces of their favorite types find their way into their own music. The best way to sum up the style is by saying they have a broad range. They can pull off most styles of music and can merge different styles quite nicely as well.
Here are some comments from articles and other such things to show what some others think about Ash & Zack:
"The duo began to play, with Knauer playing guitar and providing back-up vocals. The music was put together nicely, and the two really seemed to know how to pair with the other. 'Their voices match really well,' said one audience member." ~ Keene Equinox
"Arnott has a very clean and pure voice, with a kind of quiet power behind it that captured any listener. With her voice soaring, Knauer's backup provided a solid layer beneath, and the outcome was magical" ~Keene Equinox
"Among the covers they selected was a heart-felt version of "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones. The melody and the lyrics of this song are already so powerful, that it is hard for anyone covering the song to make it any better, with Zack and Ashley, it happened. Arnott's little improvisations and grace notes around the melody were very well done, and the song was quickly one of the best they did on that afternoon." ~Keene Equinox
