Hi and welcome to my page!
In June this year (2009), I was asked by my pastor to put music to scripture, in specific, to the 15 Songs of Ascents (Psalm 120 to Psalm 134). I took up the challenge, and have since finished all 15 Songs of Ascents, plus a couple of other Psalms. From the start of the first Psalm which I worked on (which was Psalm 130) to the completion of last one (Psalm 133), I have not ceased to be amazed, for the Lord gave me melody after melody to fit His words. I thank my pastor for having the vision, and for challenging me to the task. I thank my church for enthusiastically learning and singing these psalms. I thank my husband for providing me with all that I needed to work on these psalms. I thank my kids for their endless support and love (they are my biggest fans and worst critics!). I thank my friends (in particular Pastor Wah Lok and a brother whom I've never met in person) for their help, feedback and encouragement. Most of all, I thank my God, my Lord and Master, for seeing me fit to be a channel for what He wants to bless the body of Christ with.
Here's a short write-up for a better understanding on the Songs of Ascents:
The title "Song of Ascents" identifies each of Psalms 120-134 as a pilgrim song to be sung when the Israelites "ascended" (went up) to Jerusalem to worship God at the annual feasts. These 15 psalms fall neatly into five groups of three. The first four groups (Pss. 120-131) are similarly cyclical in themes: the first psalm exposes a situation of distress; the second emphasizes the Lord's deliverance and hope; and the third celebrates our security in Zion and God. The last three songs, Psalms 132-134 are all psalms of arrival of the ark in Zion, fellowship in Zion, blessing in Zion. Collectively, the "Songs of Ascents" urges the pilgrim to focus and move towards Zion with this ultimate message: our hope and salvation is in God who dwells in Zion.
The Songs of Ascents are prophetic of the end time, where the true Church of Jesus Christ will go through times of distressing tribulations as they look forward to the return of the Lord Jesus Christ (Mt 24: 9-13, 22, 29-31). The true believers will always be on an inward spiritual journey towards physical and spiritual Zion, that is, both the hope of reigning with Him in Jerusalem and our eternity with Him in heaven. The Songs of Ascent build this hope in us, and that even now, our salvation, deliverance and protection are in the God of Zion.
