Assimilate is an electronic music project by Ben Endicott that began in 2000, incorporating elements of IDM, industrial, ebm, and various other styles.
Why this name?
Assimilate is the name a friend and I came up with to make the distinction between this music and what is now known as my Imaginary Numbers project. The name was probably inspired by Skinny Puppy's song.
Do you play live?
There have been no performances since the songs are electronic compositions that can't easily be recreated live.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet and various ways of transferring music over it have been beneficial to the music industry in many ways (in my opinion). I know it has helped me discover many excellent bands that will probably never be heard on the radio or seen on television. It is a challenge to the record execs who only want to make money off hit songs.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably. I have my reservations and non-compromising points, but wider recognition and appreciation would be nice.
Your influences?
IDM, industrial, ebm, synthpop, futurepop, trance, minimal, electronic music
Perhaps similar to Aphex Twin, Plaid, Kinesthesia, The Orb, Apoptygma Berzerk, Skinny Puppy, Fischerspooner, Radiohead
Favorite spot?
I don't perform for Assimilate, but I've always liked St. Louis. Chicago is an interesting city as well.
Equipment used:
Fruity Loops (various versions through the years),
Goldwave, Cubase VST, the occasional guitar
Anything else...?
Also, go check out Udermir here at soundclick. He's a friend who makes good dark ambient music.
