Falik is a world fusion dance band. That is to say, we take our influences from the world around us and make dance music; everything from simple slow grooves to dance rock to house tracks. Belly dance to bar dancing. Our latest batch of material focuses on M.E. influences and specifically, the Irish bouzouki.
Why this name?
"Falik" is a character I invented - "Falik Zymbole", a happy-go-lucky guy who lives for music.
Do you play live?
We rarely perform live due to the nature of the material; it's predominently studio-based. However, every once in a while I'll take the bouzouki out and play at a local Renaissance Faire.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It changes the entire paradigm, doesn't it? Commercial music no longer manifests itself as only something you find at a record store on a shelf. The entire financial model has radically changed. The power is shifting back to grass-roots entrepenuers who are more readily able to take advantage of the change. Artist have more control over their efforts, not less. It's the monlithic record companies that are looking for a way to maintain the status quo. Fortunately, they're not going to find it!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Why would I? I'm in control of my own destiny. What could a major label do for me that I am not already doing for myself?
Band History:
I've been making music for a very long time - composing, performing, etc. - in a lot of different bands, but one thing always remained constant; I always considered my best work to be songs you can dance to. You know, the old "American Bandstand" test. Well, I finally decided to put my mantra where my mouth was, and thus "Falik" was born.
Your influences?
Any band with a good drummer or cool beats because I'm a long-time bass player. I love groups into rhythms.
Favorite spot?
My back yard.
Equipment used:
Sonar XL.
Anything else...?
I'll be performing with Jeremiah Soto and "Solace" in the next few months. Looking forward to that!
