I am Mal Mapes. The whole band part is a bit exaggerated. I'm a simple four-chord salesman armed with a guitar, and generally I just play with a drummer. I've lived here in the Cleveland area nearly my entire life, and it's rewarded me with plenty of ideas (and exaggerations) for songs, poetry, and life in general...
Why this name?
Considering I'm not much more than myself, just being me for the band name seemed fitting.
Do you play live?
I love to play live. I've been through two bands as a bass player, and there's nothing like going up to play and knowing that there's people who came to see you are there, and hopefully you can turn the heads of the others....get em hooked.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think that the internet is going to help get the underdogs out in the open. It minimizes the cost of part of getting your name out. At the same time, working your butt off locally is still a major factor. Gotta have some bragging rights in the real world, right?
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I may...I don't know. Its music. If someone really wanted to pay me to sing, I suppose it would be something I would consider.
Band History:
Mal Mapes (guitar) - 2000-present
Elliot Mapes (drums) - 2000-2004, back in town and working again.
Your influences?
My influences include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, a great group of local musicians (Charlie Mosbrook, Alan Grandy), Soul Coughing/M. Doughty, The Black Keys, different punk groups......It's a big list.
Favorite spot?
Here in Cleveland....I have no clue. Lot of places. Suppose Common Grounds and Denny's are the best hangouts. Other than that, get lost in the Metroparks.
Equipment used:
I have 2 guitars: A '71 Yamaha FG-260 12-string acoustic, a Mitchell (No idea on the model) acoustic, and use a Markley 'bucker for those. At one point, I had a Fender DG-11 acoustic-electric (may it rest in pieces). My amp is just a Fender Frontman 25R with a 2-channel footswitch. It's a versatile amp and a lot of fun to mess with.
