Clifton Newell is a twenty year old singer/songwriter who favors the guitar. He is particularly attached to the six-stringed instrument but deeply enjoys any device that is capable of creating any sort of melodic hum. He was able to record ten songs in the summer of 2004 with a full band and is preparing an acoustic/full band tour of the east coast the summer of 2005. Clifton’s sound has evolved over the past couple of years, from more of a smooth alternative sound to a more grown up melodic reverberation utilizing any instrument that he can find in order to create something beautiful. He has an ability to put someone to sleep with his soft voice and smooth melody or to provide the astonishing personalized soundtrack to a summer night. His intent was to create moods and paint pictures with his music and he did just that with his first independent release “Window Viewing”.
Why this name?
I think that question has an obvious answer.
Do you play live?
I have played at several coffee houses and wil continue to do so (good crowd). I am planning my first tour of the east coast for the summer of 2005.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think we will hear more great artists thanks to the internet.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If the timing were right (meaning, if I could still control everything).
Band History:
Based in a little village in southern Pennsylvania, a village filled to the brim with coffee shops and history, Clifton Newell formulated his melodic sound by capturing a pinch of apathy, and just a bit of ambience, then brewing it into one peaceful lullaby. One July evening, he stumbled into a sort of “hutch” and found a little studio to pour his thoughts into, and at the age of 19, he began to record songs of “what if’s”, sleep anthems, and just general songs about everyday happenings (most of which happened only in his beautiful imagination). Near the end of the summer, he attached a title to his work…Window Viewing. The title track, the last song on the album, simply encourages the listeners to breathe. Remember what the warmth of summer feels like; remember how it tastes…because it leaves. The second song on the album is more or less a recollection of a summer’s eve on which a mistake was made but then redeemed by the realization of the beauty that is her…who is his. Patience is a collective wonder that, as its writer, longs to meet every cliché…knowingly. An acoustic masterpiece entitled Temporary Formality stems from the idea that love may become just something that someone has gotten used to. What sort of sadness is imaginable knowing that love has become just a word? An ambient electronic instrumental, called dream, plays with the idea that we might not actually know anything, because after all…who is to say that we are not living a dream? There is a song written by Clifton Newell called “It’s Alright”, which is just a reminder to all those who have somebody to miss from the ones who are missed. It’s Alright/I’m not gone/I’m just waiting for you. It has since been said that his album is one that should be played on a warm summer night, driving down an empty road with all the windows down. Some would even venture to say that the album sounds its best under a starlit sky. No matter where you are, or what the eve brings, I would encourage you to “listen…close your eyes…imagine…if you’d like.”
