Well thus far it is myself, Sean and Matty. We had a really good drummer but something was in his head and for some odd reason he couldn't really keep a solid beat. Not to mention as far as personalities go we didn't get along the way we should. At any rate I play lead, my name is Eric, and I started playing when I was 18. Sean started playing when he was 18 a month before me and he is our rhythym/lead singer. We're all 23 now, by the way. Matt has been playing bass now for 4 years. Our drummers name was Bishop, but he's not here any longer.
Why this name?
Well we were initially called Veritas, inspired by Boondock Saints... but nobody could pronounce it properly or knew what it meant so we decided to go with something even more obscure. Soma. By the way, Veritas means truth in Latin. Soma is a 'happy drug' in the book Brave New World, so we thought we'd be smug and assume the role of it's purpose.
Do you play live?
We have only played live shows at our home, but we've played 5 times and the crowds get even bigger. I love playing live, sometimes the moments are a bit larger than life, but it's awesome. The best moments for me are when people we don't even know come up and say, "Wow, you guys are awesome! Can I get a CD?"
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it made a positive impact. It allows more opportunity to get songs to people who otherwise may not have the ability or means to get them. I like the idea of free music.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Lets not be irrational here. Part of the reason I play is because I love it almost more than my own family, but in fact I would love to do it solely as a career, rather than on the side. So yes, I would sign a contract.
Band History:
Essentially it all began when Sean and I attended CU Boulder together for our first semester. There was a lot of BS that we both had to deal with. And it was also the first time we realized school was something that wasn't for us to do. So we asked ourselves what we could do besides that. Our love for music has only grown since we were 12. Obviously we had adolescent dreams of being in a band, but who knew we would actually muster up the essentials to do what we've always loved. I've known Matty since I was like 9 or something like that, so we've known each other for some years. And I've known Sean for like 9 years or something to that degree. Those are the basics. Anyway Sean and I were learning how to play our instruments throughout that year of freshman hell. About a year later we were seriously entertaining the notion we could play. So we asked our good buddy Matt if he would learn the bass so we could play! The kicker was one day, a buddy of mine introduced me to this kid named Bishop and we were all just hangin out. Bishop sees this drumset we had bought like 2 weeks before and he's like, "Do ya mind if I bang on these for a bit?" Seriously, I was scared because he was so naturally atuned to the drums. So basically he got good, and we started making music to this day!
Your influences?
We all love Unwritten Law. Matty and Sean are fans of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I am a personal fan of Green Day. I also like bands like Zebrahead, the Matches, Weezer, Handsome Devil, Goldfinger, GOB, Brand New etc... Sean's main influences are Weezer, and a few others but I forgot! Hahaha. Matt loves this dude named Victor Wooten (SP?) and the likes. But he and I are huge fans of Green Day.
Favorite spot?
Well, being that we haven't played in any other cities I can't answer this question.
Equipment used:
I play a Fender Strat, and a Schecter C-1 Elite. Sean has an Epiphone LP, which sometimes we switch off. Matt plays a Washburn Bass. Matt and I use Fender Amps, and Sean has a Crate. Love the monster cables. We have our own P.A. System, but I won't list all that because I don't think that is what this question is asking.
Anything else...?
We really want to just say we're enjoying the ride and we love making music. We are looking for a drummer in Denver, CO, if you happened to know one or be one hit us up. Thanks.
