Why this name?
The name “Gumbo” was given to me by my grandma when I was a child because I always used to eat gumbo as it was my favorite dish. From there it grew from my family and friends calling me by that name. Now it symbolizes the different influences in my music which reflects in my diverse style. I feel just like with the dish ‘gumbo’ one can expect various types of ingredients well with my music it surprises and pleases the listener.
Do you play live?
I play live anywhere that someone will give me a mic and allow me to perform. I feel that there is no such thing as bad exposure. Whatever possible way it takes to get heard by people, I will do it. Live shows give you a great opportunity to give the audience a truly entertaining experience. I’ve performed all throughout the southeast and have had many special moments. But I would say the best moment was performing in front of thousands of my peers at the 2004 Clark Atlanta University Homecoming concert. The response was tremendous and positive.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It is changing the whole face of the music industry. To me it was inevitable as the computer age as changed the whole world not just music. It means now that artists have to really put out high quality music so consumers feel its worth their hard earned money to go into a record store and buy your album not just download the couple of hot songs that you might have on your album. You have to give people a product that is worth their money. Either way, the internet allows independent artists such as myself a way to promote and distribute their music.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, I would but if the situation was right. I feel that a good deal would have to be on the table as I have gotten offers from several majors. I just feel that continuing building my buzz independently will allow me to gain more leverage to get a more lucrative recording contract.
Your influences?
Biggie, Tupac, WuTang, Marvin Gaye, Outkast
Favorite spot?
I can’t forget about my home state. Any city in Louisiana I enjoy stopping through. It’s all home to me. Also, Miami. I love the women down there.
Anything else...?
