Why this name?
I've had many projects over the years, and I've named them according to the specific vision of that band. All in all, it's me behind everything, so I can only go by my name.
Do you play live?
I've played live, on tour in many formations aside from my own. Those who know me, know that they are in for an evening of not just "heavy jazz" but they will also be entertained.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's putting more power in the hands of the artists, although the artists must really learn more "business sense". Without it, mp3 or the internet won't get him/her very far either.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, mainly for the financial backing and clientele.
Band History:
It all started with the Evan Tate Quintet (featuring Trumpeter Ray Vega ) back in 1976. I was 15 at the time. I did one private recording with the band with tunes I either wrote and/or arranged. For this session I added a second trumpet and 2 trombones to the band. In 1982 I formed Rewind, a jazz fusion project with buddies of mine at the Manhattan School of Music. We enjoyed a local following until I started touring Europe with musicials. From 1988 on I've run bands in Europe under name of Evan Tate's "UNIT" and "ET03". My newset projects are "Spherical", "Tate-tronic" and the "Spherical Orchestra".
Your influences?
Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Steve Coleman, John Coltrane, Greg Osby, Miles Davis, Steve Grossman, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner,..and the list goes on.
Favorite spot?
The Island of Sardinia!
Equipment used:
Julius Keilwerth SX90R Alto Sax and Julius Keilwerth SX90 Soprano sax.
Anything else...?
I endorse saxophones from Julius Keilwerth (SX90R), and still love my Selmer Mark VI.
