Yo, it's ya man I.G. representing for the Almighty OYD, Oracles of Dialect, NYC, DMV, and the ATL! I'm feeling like i got my own swag right now so peep da tracks a let a brother know wussp!
Why this name?
ILL GEE... aka I.G. Originally known as ILL GRAMMATIX. I basically jacked the name out of a line i used in an old rhyme I did back in the day... "I'm the ill grammatical lyrical rap fanatical..." It sounded good so i stuck with it. After awhile i got tired of typing and writing the whole thing out and it became ILL GEE... from there i shortened it to I.G. or I GEE... becuz that's what I do... I GEE!... get it?...lol But if you listen to the lyrics in Budget Balla, I gee in my own way... not the same way that most of the cornballs out now do it.
Do you play live?
I've done a lot of shows at NYU... did a few parties up in Manhattan and one in CT. I haven't performed in years but i'm on a whole new thing now and I'm almost ready to get back out there. I think the moment i knew i could do this for real was when I was in King's Plaza Mall in Brooklyn and me and my boys got kicked out for rhyming and "loitering". We went outside and continued the cypher... just me and and like 3 other dudes zoning out... not paying attention to anyone, ya know. I break out into this one song i had called Who Wants Some.... and while I'm rhyming and doing the hook I start to hear more and more people joining in with me... next thing i know we got like 50 people around me chanting my chorus while they were waiting for the bus! It was bananas!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It all depends on how you use it and how OTHERS are using it. I mean, for the new kats, you can get a lot of exposure you wouldn't normally get doing it the old-fashioned way. But the dudes that are established... I feel for those dudes. All it takes is for one jackass to post that artist's song on the web and "BAMM!" he just lost thousands of dollars cuz dudes want it for free and don't wanna pay what's due to the artist. It has its pros and its cons.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I'm not sure. Right now it seems like Indie is da way to go. There's still a lot of money out there, even in this economy. You just have to be creative and get out there and get your piece!
Band History:
LMAO... man, i been down with Da Mysfitz, OYD, KOC, Black Ops, Oracles of Dialect, Reality Check, Da Lunaticks (not the one's down with Nelly) and a few others that i have long forgotten about!
Your influences?
Rakim the GOD of hip-hop, public enemy, KRS ONE, BDP, BDK, Craig G, Kurtis Blow, Sugar Hill Gang, Afrikaa Bambataa, DOugie Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew, Dana Dane, Slick Rick, Run DMC, LL Cool J, NWA, EPMD, Souls of Mischief, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Jungle Brothers, Tribe Called Quest, Leaders of the New School, Redman, Black Moon, BIG, Tupac, Big L, Fat Joe, Big Pun, Terror Squad, DITC crew, Brand Nubians, Heltah Skeltah, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Spinbad.... and a bunch more i can't think of at the top of my head right now (and that's just the hip hop kats... i haven't even touched R&B and Soul and any of the other genres of music!)
Favorite spot?
NYC!.. hands down... and then ATL!
Equipment used:
I have a few programs that i haven't learned to use yet but for now I am using Acoustica Mixcraft and my Samson CO1U along with beats I buy on the net. Trying to get that upgrade soon!
Anything else...?
All I ask is for good quality feedback... good and bad... what can be done better what should i stick with... any special tricks or techniques to make my sound quality better... my delivery.... the flow... the content.... I do this because this is me and it's what i do... but ultimately I want the fans to give me input because some of what i feel I know someone else may be feeling too! One thing you will never hear me do is brag about what i got, how much money i spend, how many "hoes" I get or how hard or gangsta i think i am... there's enough of those phony asses out there giving all the rest of us REAL emcees a bad rep. If you want real music with real emotion and rings true to REAL life then you will find that here.

Real recognizes real!
