Influenced by artists such as 'Brian Wilson', 'Super Furry Animals', and 'XTC', 'Battery Brides' mix a unique blend of psychedelic orchestral pop, absurd cartoon-electronica, and a surreal use of the English language to make fun and diverse music. Formed in 2004 from the remains of 3 piece rock band 'Fluronova' (who were by then a reasonably experienced gigging machine, playing at venues such as the Pressure Point and Pavilion Theatre in the Brighton/Worthing area), with Paul Steel on songwriting duties and Kelwen Cooke with some satisfyingly "phat" bass. 'Battery Brides', still in their teens, hope to become successful recording artists and aim to have thier music commercially available to share with the waiting world.
Why this name?
A tribute to another great pop band called XTC.
Do you play live?
Worthing/Brighton venues such as Concorde 2, Pressure Point, Freebutt, Worthing Assembly Halls, Pavilion Theatre, Waterfront etc etc. Playing live can be alot of fun. Every Battery Brides moment is a beautiful one.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
On one hand it can cheat alot of people out of money they truly deserve but on the other hand the average guy doesn't really give a shit. More bands need to do MP3 releases on their sites and get more of their rare stuff out there via the internet. Always buy if possible.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If it was a reasonable offer.
Band History:
Paul Steel is the songwriting propeller behind the Battery Brides warship (wft?). On vocals, piano and guitar, Paul's psychadelic pop stylings are bidding for global (maybe local) domination. With plenty of live experience fronting 'Fluronova' and playing bass for Brighton band 'Distance', Paul has also produced, arranged and co-composed music for a production of MacBeth performed at the Gardner Arts Centre. Paul takes care of the arranging and producing with his reasonable PC-based recording setup. Paul very much enjoys listening to vocal harmonies and large orchestral arrangements like those of the Beach Boys and also has an secret passion for mildly amusing techno-rock.

Sir Kelwen of Cooke may never have picked up the bass had it not been for his unashamed love of those much ignored frequencies between 30Hz to 100Hz. When he's hung up his axe he often listens to obscure and experimental artists such as Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, Brian Wilson and quirky rock bands such as Crackout. For anyone who saw the 'Fluronova' shows they will tell you Kelwen truly puts the "'n'" in "Rock'n'Roll"... this being a very serious responsibility for someone of his modest height, but when it all boils down, Kelwen justs wants to play silly music and have fun.
