Hi, I'm Sir John Reid Hatchporch, President, CEO and Head Honcho of Crapple Records, Inc. At the moment, I specialize in retro New Romantic synthpop and new wave, with mainly British influences.
Why this name?
This isn't my band name, per se...just my pseudonym. My plan is to record a few different albums under as many different names.
Do you play live?
Not yet, but I plan to...if I can find any like-minded individuals, let alone ones who play keyboard. Everyone and their uncle seems to play guitar these days, but keyboardists are few and far between.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
If anything, mp3s have served as a wakeup call to the music industry. Anyone can have anything they want now at the click of a mouse...and they don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Personally, I only download rare and out of print things, like obscure Thomas Dolby b-sides ripped from vinyl. There's a market for those things, but as long as record labels insist on sitting on the master tapes for that kind of stuff, there should be some sort of channel for those who want to preserve it. In that sense, mp3s are absolutely invaluable.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
At this point in my life, probably...but only if I had the power to do things the way I want to. I know of way too many artists who had to compromise their ideals because of some corporate dictum. Some of them even went under because of it.
Band History:
I started out writing and recording my own songs around 1993 or so. I had been writing instrumentals but was loathe to write any lyrics, as I hated my own voice. A good friend of mine named John Prater (who was also a great songwriter in his own right) suggested that I start writing lyrics and I went from there. I recorded three albums at home in 1994 and 1995, using a myriad of instruments and a $400 Yamaha 4-track machine. I had a bit of a hiatus from writing my own music in the late '90s (with some exceptions), but in June I emerged from my musical coma. I record everything onto my computer now, using N-Track Studio.
Your influences?
This list could be endless, but these are the influences I see cropping up in my music the most these days, in rough order of inspiration: Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson, Thomas Dolby, Pulsars, The Cars, Future Bible Heroes, The Magnetic Fields, Pet Shop Boys, Human League, New Musik, Joe Jackson, Devo, Talking Heads, Vince Clarke, Frazier Chorus, Kraftwerk, Art Of Noise, Pete Shelley, Gary Numan, The Buggles, The Rentals, Wall Of Voodoo, XTC, Joy Division.
Favorite spot?
Sitting behind a grand piano, or at a Kraftwerk concert.
Equipment used:
Three generations of vintage Casio keyboards (the most recent one is from about 1988), programmed MIDI drumbeats or sampled drumbeats, occasional electric or acoustic guitars. Only drumbeats are programmed. Everything else is played live by me.
