Born in Toronto, she was a year old when her parents moved the family to their hometown, Gabarus - a little farming/fishing community in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

Being raised on the Cape, Karen was highly influenced by her Celtic background. The house was always filled with music, family and friends. Karen's father, Jimmy Stewart, played the harmonica and Terry Peters, a very popular Cape Breton musician encouraged Karen to sing.

She started to write songs at the age of 7 and by the age of 12, Karen was performing.
