We are from the island of Mauritius, off the east coast of Africa. We use traditional rhythms (sega and seggae 6/8 and african 12/8) as a base, then layer more modern melodies and arrangements, and end up with music.
Why this name?
Tahé! means "Damn!" in creole. We like the name because this is precicely the reaction we want from people listening to our music.
Do you play live?
At the moment only in Mauritius, but we have big plans...
If you make it big..?
Dat's da plan, man
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The music can finally speak for itself instead of the record labels deciding what people will listen to.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Has anyone ever said no to this question? I guess we would only say no if the big bad record company tried to turn us into a boy's band or something ridiculous...
Band History:
3 of Tahé's members are ex-members of Kaya's band, the legend of Mauritian music (killed by police in a jail cell in February 1999) : Sabrina Simiette (singer),Gilbert Kupusamy (singer, drummer), Damien Elisa (keyboards). Marc Boulle plays guitar, Richard Hein plays bass, Johnny Joseph plays drums and percussion.
Your influences?
Fela Kuti, Agélique Kidjo, Kaya, Ziskakan, Sting, Bob Marley, Leilla Négrau, Joe Zawinul, Youssou 'n' Dour, Touré Kunda, Zap Mama
Favorite spot?
A deserted beach in Mauritius...For music and culture though, New York City (slightly different from the beach)
