Passion. Energy. Emotion. Ambition. Those are just a few of the words that scratch the surface of Atlanta-based quartet, Wastegate. With a powerhouse sound that is laced with enigmatic melodies and heartfelt vocals, Wastegate is dead set on not being set on anything. Their music has no boundaries, and while they consider themselves to be in the vein of hard rock, they refuse to limit themselves to the confines of any genre. This is quite evident in their songs, which possess a variety of musical flavors from blues and classic rock to tribal percussion and metal. Wastegate’s live performances are a direct extension of their music in the best way possible. Crowds from all over are intrigued within the first few minutes, and by the end of the set, the crowd is left wanting more. Wastegate is determined to make their mark in music history.
Why this name?
Our guitarist is into cars and after he explained what a wastegate was to the rest of us we all felt that it fit us perfectly because it acts metaphorically what we hope our music will achieve to our listeners: flush out all the negative energy and bad things in their lives so they can perform better and happier.
Do you play live?
We play live and if we had it our way...thats all we would do.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Immensely. The Internet is a huge tool for today's independent musician but now you are faced with the same thing that you had to face long ago...so many bands and so little options to make yourself stand out there among all the great music and talent.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Absolutely.
Band History:
This powerhouse quartet began its journey in November of 2000 when a mutual friend introduced guitarists Chad Watson and Gogi Randhawa. Randhawa had been searching for the perfect lineup for several years and played in several ill fated bands that never made it out of the garage. Watson made a name for himself in his previous band, Big Slow Wreck, in which he played several high profile shows including the NEMO music conference in Boston and Lollapalooza and opened for bands such as Sevendust and Injected. The two hit it off immediately and although there were such obvious differences in their playing styles, they complimented each other perfectly.

After months of searching for the right drummer, Devin Nutter joined the lineup with the same focus and energy the band needed to push it forward. His hard hitting skills bring a thunder to the band that creates the perfect backbone. Wastegate now had only one position left to fill to complete the line-up. Enter Carlton Westbrook. Westbrook shared the same passion for the music immediately. "From the first chords I heard. I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of." Wastegate’s core lineup was finally completed in February of 2002.
