Back in '97, a young man by the name of Wayne Sonnier was thrown into the world of rap. Largely influenced by friends and ADD, Astro Jones was born. Mainly writing untill the year 2000, this man focus stongly on his music and poetry. At New Mexico State U., Astro Jones got a job working at KRUX radio (91.5 in Las Cruces, NM). From that point, his freestyle would start to advance to another level. Soon, Astro Jones started joining the local frestyle circuit in El Paso, Tx ending up winning 2 championships in 2003. Now, he focuses on finishing his album, with a hope that the door of opportunity would soon open and the world would get a chance to catch the "Sonlyte."
Why this name?
Astro came from being the smart kid in the Astronomy class in high school. Jones came from my sense of humor and jonesin' with my people.
Do you play live?
I perform live. All my shos are done without a hype man. I also sing live on my set...I feel it adds a little uniqueness and flavor to the performance.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It allows your music to be easily accessible internationally. People from different countries are able to click on your songs and hear them, so when you do come out, they've already heard you before and either enjoy or hate your music.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Hell yeah!! Don't get it twisted though. I don't do this for the money, but I can't live of notebook pages alone, you know?
Band History:
Solo Artist, no band members.
Your influences?
Hip-Hop: Black Star, The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, Slum Village, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quet, & The Fugees.
R&B: Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Raphael Saadiq, Brian McKnight, D'Angelo, & various others.
Favorite spot?
The Sun City, right where I'm at in El Paso, Tx. Not too much trouble, but enough activities to get into.
Anything else...?
Not only do I write my own lyrics and sing, I also produce as well. Currently learning how to engineer with Pro Tools. "An emcees that only has one skill is as useless as a tree that bares no fruit. Master all skills and be come the tree that bares a plentful harvest."
