play lo-fi play hi-fi  Pink Floyd - Young Lust

October 29, 2002

Not a lot up here at the moment, mainly because I'm not very disciplined in the studio. I get a lot of great ideas for stuff I just have to work on, and generally get them about three-quarters done. At this point I typically get bored or find something more compelling to work on, so I probably have close to fifty projects in progress. I've finished, at last count, one.

What's next

My biggest project to date is a recording of the entire Wish You Were Here album. I was hoping to have it done in time for the album's 25th anniversary, but I blew past that dealine without ever looking back. I've been working on it, on and off (mostly off), for longer than I care to think about. The first half of "Shine On" is pretty much done, as is the title track (which I'm planning to release Real Soon Now™). "Have A Cigar" is in pretty good shape, but the guitars are gonna take a lot of work (and practice!). "Welcome to the Machine" is in its infancy; I'm going to have to master my Pulsar board to get the synth sounds for that one. The second half of "Shine On" is basically backing tracks at this point. That's another one where the guitars are going to be tough (the slide solo may kill me, but what a way to go).

Let me know what you think!

If you listen to my stuff, please consider dropping me a line to let me know what you thought of it. All comments, positive or otherwise, are welcome.

Why this name?
I figured it was a good choice, since I find it very easy to remember (usually).
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Sure. Give me a call. I'll be waiting by the phone.
Your influences?
Chiefly David Gilmour, although lately a bit of John Frusciante has been creeping in....
Equipment used:

My studio centers around a Fostex DMT-8 digital recorder/mixer (although I tend not to use the "recorder" bit much these days), a Roland XV-5050 sound module, and my computer running Cakewalk Sonar. Other stuff includes the usual assortment of stomp boxes, a rack-mounted delay (DeltaLab Effectron I), EQ and compressor (Rocktron 310), a Yamaha keyboard and a dk10 drum pad. I have a Boss RV-2 reverb pedal wired into one of the effects loops on the DMT-8. My vocal mic is an Audio-Technica AT3525. I monitor through Sony MDR-7506 headphones or a Samson Servo 120 amp driving a pair of Polk Audio studio monitors.

My principal guitar is a customized 2001 Fender American Vintage Series '57 Strat Reissue (try saying that ten times fast). I replaced the electronics with EMG's DG-20 kit (SA pickups, EXG and SPC tone controls. I pitched the cheesy pearl pickguard that came with the kit, and remounted everything on a white Fender 50's-style pickguard with the original knobs, so it looks as stock as possible. The only other mods were to shorten the tremolo arm and tweak the spring tension so it plays like my other guitars.

Anything else...?
Is it real?
