Why this name?
The name "Lost Angels" came about from how we see ourselves. You see we’re not your average super thugs of rap, in fact we don't even try to be. But at the same time the positions we’re in often throws us in situations where we have no choice but to wild sometimes just to stay on top. It’s like the cards life hands us aren’t ones we can always play with a clear conscience, but we refuse to let that break us and make us something were not. That’s where the lost angels came from us being cool dudes in some of the tougher situations in life.
Do you play live?
For us we prefer performing more than anything else, it gives us a chance to have our music heard and at the same time see how people feel our music. We’re performing all over the L.A area right now. For booking call (310) 430-8286 or (310) 323-0176 .
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet has drastically changed the music industry, but don’t get us wrong that’s a good thing it makes more music available to the people. Plus, it gives independent artist like us the chance to be heard around the globe and that’s dope.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
We don’t know we like the independent thing, but if it came to it we would only sign a distribution deal, and that’s if the deal was really right. But we would never leave our Above Y'all family behind, we couldn't were all in this together! AY
Band History:
Conceived from the minds of Christopher S. Jones(R.I.P.), Basilos Thomas, and Devin Funches, Above Y’all Entertainment was formed during the summer of 2000 in Gardena Ca. The label’s goal was to assemble talented artists located in the city of Gardena for the purpose of producing music with higher quality than that heard on the radio.
First signed to the label was Catrell Smith, a.k.a. Dacypha who, early, proved himself to be one of Gardena’s most talented rappers and likely one of the best on the west coast. His unique voice, delivery and way of perfectly capturing and expressing the essences of his surroundings have helped him to relate to his audience regardless of whether or not they have experienced the events in his lyrics. In addition to having such a talented artist, Above Y’all entertainment also has one of the most talented producers the music industry has to offer. Producer Charles Williams II, a.k.a. Bless has a sound unlike any other producer in the industry, although he has been compared to such great producers as Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Mannie Fresh and the Neptunes.
Dacypha (Catrell Smith) and Bless (Charles Williams II) made AYE’s first hit “keep mashin” featuring LAX (Xavier Ross) who is now also signed to AYE. The hit song surged through Gardena’s underground circuit via a mix tape full of promotional songs entitled Above Y’all Entertainment presents...Can you buy that. Dacypha, Bless, and LAX then went on to perform at talent showcases around the Los Angeles area, stealing the crowd everywhere they went. However, later Dacypha introduced the administrative staff of Above Yall Entertainment to his brother Skitzo, (William Smith) whom he referred to as his own favorite rapper. Skitzo’s unique style and flow brought just the right amount of energy to perfectly compliment Dacypha’s laid-back style. AYE decided to pair the two in a group and the rap duo “Lost Angels” was formed. Above Y’all entertainment released a promotional mixtape to give consumers a taste of the lost angels’ music. The mix tape was entitled Above Y’all Entertainment presents...It’s just a mixtape stupid vol. 1 &2 and featured the under the radar classics “Killa Cali way”, “Take it out side”, and “I Know (YOU)”. The acceptance of the new group was so well that AYE decided it was time to release the companies first LP entitled “Broke N Respected”.
While they began to receive much recognition for the musical aspect of the company, the founders of AYE were also laying down the ground work necessary to start a technology, real estate, and graphic arts department of their company. This was done in an effort to manage and maintain the same level of quality and reliability in their products that their music division was already becoming known for. While establishing their company AYE’s three founders also worked on putting together a creative arts career school for inner city teens so that these teens could have the ability to come and learn how to turn their talents and passions into a career. While also learning ways to strengthen their talents, visiting industry professionals on the job, and learning to use the industry standard equipment.
Above Y’alls’ Lost Angels are currently performing at and selling out shows at venues all over Los Angeles, promoting their first studio album “Broke N Respected.” They are interested in performing at as many additional venues as possible in order to expand their fan base and to give current fans more chances to see their captivating performances. Your influences?
There are too many to list them all but to name a few; 2Pac (R.I.P.), Biggie (R.I.P.), Snoop, E-40, and we can’t forget Outkast or the Dogg Pound. But everything we hear musically influences us to some degree whether it be a song or the way the rain hits the window pain. Anything with a rhythm is our musical influence.
Favorite spot?
We would have to say our favorite city is our hometown GARDENA, California. We get a lot of love out here and it’s where everybody hold us down. But don’t get us wrong we love seeing new places, almost as much as we love our fans.
Equipment used:
All we need is a beat (preferably a Bless beat) and a mic!
