Jam Samich is more less a Jamband. We like blues, funk, jazz, rock, reggae, folk, fusion, prog-rock, latin, and metal. We've been known to combine them a time or two. Let's just say Jamband though because that's what we do. Two lead guitarists = fun.
Why this name?
We started playing at open mic nights and since we didn't have a name we would just make one up each week. Jam Samwich was the second name we came up with for the second show. We thought it was kinda cool and the open jam host announced us as "Yam Samich" Well at least Samich is short for Samwich but he totally missed the word Jam. We liked Samich so much we dropped the w so we're now Jam Samich. The guitarists are the bread slices and the rhythm section is the gooey mess inside which also oozes out the sides when compressed. Their grooves will get all over you like sloppy jam.
Do you play live?
We've played a few bars and have some more shows booked. We play at Overtyme Grill and Tap Room most Tuesday nights at their open jams. We played at a WRIF sponsored show at New Way Bar in Ferndale ( got our name mentioned on the WRIF a few times and I'm told they played one of our songs on the air) We just finished a successful show at the Detroiter downtown.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet changes everything. No person alive or industry will remain uneffected. It's just a new transition much like when radios and TVs came out. It may devour an artist's earnings because of pirates everywhere but it definately helps the little people like us with publicity. We love the internet... People that ran Telegraphs hated phones when they came out... it's no different. Get used to it or sink.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
you know it... Money equalls better gear, quitting our dayjobs, and taking this Samich on the road. Indie labels are cool but honestly when you play the type of music we do you have to really be self sufficient because its far from mainstream. Putting out a good CD in our genre is nowhere near as important as putting on good shows all over the place.
Band History:
Jam Samich was started as a nameless "hippie" style band about 5 years ago in Chuck's basement. Chuck played with various projects before meeting Mike Conley at a friend's house. Chuck and Mike had a band with "Mindrought" bassist Bill Brown. After about a year of random jamming and stuff we parted ways with Bill and got together with a bass player, and his little bro that played guitar. (Chris and Matt) We wrote a bunch of material and did absolutely nothing with it. After playing a Halloween show (our first gig) we realized that people liked us. Now we started getting serious and that's when Matt had to bail because our evolution was moving way fast and probably not in the direction he hoped. (Matt still Jams and is always going to be a welcomed guest to our shows) The search for a guitarist was on... After auditioning several players that were exactly what we were looking for, we found one that was beyond that. JAMMY JOE STANLEY!!! This guy can melt your face off with his tone alone. He was the key to nonstop rocking. Alas!!! Jam Samich is born!! The freight train starts rolling... All aboard y'all!
Your influences?
We have a broad range of influences. I'll just combine them: Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Steve Vai, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Scott Henderson, John Petrucci, 311, P-Funk, Gov't Mule, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tool, Estradasphere, Fantomas, C-Lit, Allman Brothers, Dream Theater, ZAPPA, Ween, Incubus, Mike Patton, Chris Janowski, Johnny Cash, Lenny Kravitz, Henry Rollins, Mike Conley, RHCP, RATM, Galactic, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, SOAD, Infectious Grooves, Tribal Tech, Ani Difranco, Beastie Boys, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Widespread Panic, Moe, Mofro, Ekoostik Hookah, Umphrey's McGee, The Dead, Metallica, Claypool, Buckethead, and Bill Brown
Favorite spot?
Well as for the band I'd have to say Waterford/Commerce area. That is where all the great keg party jams happened and also where Chris and Mike grew up. The favorite hangouts seem to be Shark's Club in Waterford, Mike's house, and Overtyme Grill and Tap Room in Clarkston.
Equipment used:
Chuck uses PRS, Fender, Ibanez, and Yamaha guitars... Marshall DSL 100 watt head with Marshall 4x12 slant cab and SHURE mics. (also an assortment of gadgets) Joe uses an Ibanez hollowbody Artstar, PRS, and Hamer guitars through Marshall amp. He also uses SHURE mics. Mike uses a custom Pearl kit from Skeeto Valdez of "The Brother's Groove." Chris uses a 5-string Fender Jazz bass through an Ampeg SVT and cab.
