Endomorph is an independent hip-hop artist from Iowa City, Iowa. You might think there is no hip-hop scene in Iowa, and so did I, but over the past year or so, a handful of cats have really been getting the ball rolling, bringing the scene that has been around to the surface, and I feel like something is really starting to come together. So I rep Iowa City to the fullest...
Why this name?
It means that I have a type of body with a marked tendency to be fat.
Do you play live?
Yeah, I've played at a few open mics and stuff. It's a lot of fun...I don't think I've yet found my proper groove and energy on stage, but hey, it's a matter of practice and I hope to do it more...
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it's great for underground artists trying to get their music discovered. Me, personally, I don't give a f*** about making any money, so the more people that hear my songs however possible, the better. I'd rather hear somebody tell me my shit's hot than have them pay $15 for my album.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yeah, under the right conditions, I suppose. Not really expecting that to ever happen though.
Band History:
Basically nothing. Been rhyming since like '98 when I started with my friend Prastefa and I've improved by many exponential powers since then. I've known Gravity, another local emcee, since grade school but we became good friends a few years ago and we've both gotten more and more into emceeing since then.
Your influences?
I'm definitely influenced by Jedi Mind Tricks and Atmosphere. To a lesser extent Virtuoso, Esoteric, Del, Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock...all the stuff that introduced me to intelligent hip-hop. I'm also a fan of the old work of Nas, Eminem, and the Kottonmouth Kings but I don't think it shows too much in my music.
Favorite spot?
It might not sound like much but I actually like Iowa City a lot. There's a good vibe here. In all the world, I really love Colorado, and Canada is pretty sweet too. I'd really like to go to Amsterdam.
Equipment used:
I have my mic and my Roland VS-880. I use my computer for some editing and cleaning stuff up a little.
Anything else...?
Shout out to Divine Manifestations, the original fam, you guys know who you are. Also to Gravity, Animosity, James Truth, DJ O-Matic, Optimus Prime, Bad Fathers, and all of Iowa City hip-hop...straight to the f***in' top!
