Freeland Republic: a mixture of dance, trance, ambient and gothic. Let synths and soundscapes together with pulsating rhythms guide you to.....
Why this name?
The bandname comes from a book by William S. Burroughs. I read that book because the name of one of my favourite bands, Steely Dan, also comes from that book. I didn't like the book but I did find a nice name for my project.
Do you play live?
No, Freeland Republic is a studio project.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The majors only seem the be interested in hypes, new Britney's and so on. Hopefully sites like this can be a platform for independent and less commercial musicians and music fans.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If that would mean I could make perfect sounding recordings and still be in charge musically, yes.
Band History:
I started playing the guitar about 25 years ago, at the age of 13. Since that time a played in several bands as a guitar player and singer. I still play in 2 bands, playing mostly rock and pop classics from the 60's until the 90's. I started working with sequenzers and synths about 3 years ago. Then I found out it is a lot of fun creating groovy electronic music using the endless amount of sounds synths have to offer. At this moment I have 3 songs finished and I think the time is right to launch this project.
Your influences?
Although F.R. is a electronic music project I hardly listen to dance or other electronic music myself. The only dance/electronic stuff I have at home are Bjork and Faithless. I mainly listen to (heavy) rock and other guitar oriented music like Rush, Allman Brothers Band, Sheryl Crow, Steely Dan, After Forever, Black Sabbath.
