Why this name?
I was tired of my previous, oh-so-very-IDM moniker "cathode ray tube" (shudder!). After playingg for a bit under my own name, I was watching Ms. Brittney Spears twangle her ddangle, and I began to parse her name in my head. A compulsive anagrammaticist, I came up with Brittney Sparse. She's got the junk in the trunkl but not much in the top bunk knowwhumsayin'?

But Brittney Sparse was initally about bringing music down to a very basic, minimal setup. That's gone out the window in favor of anything that comes into my damn head and needs ot get out.

Do you play live?
I play live on occasion. I find playing llive hard in a lot of ways. I tear apart my studio to bring out some gear to use, even though I started using a laptop (iBook and proud, mofo!) about 3 years ago. Annd then I tend ot write entirely new stuff for each and every show, which is draiining and rewarding. If I don't do new stuff, I get bored. And folks can smell that a mile away.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's obvious the Internet has seriously eroded the foundation of the music industry with its trojan horse the MP3. The major labels are all hemorrhaging from open wounds crap bands and crap music. Perhaps it's because it's the music I grew up with, but I am hard pressed to find anything about the current crop of pop music that compares with 80's dance or alternative music.

Who would have thought that the Mp3 would be the catalyst for change? This little ccompression algorithm has just got the major laabels soiling themselves in terror of this. Mp3's are repsonsible, I believe, for the gorwth of the computer industry and from the iPod to DAW's.

Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Um, perhaps. I'd need complete control over artwork and distribution. I am also a homebody, and don't particularly like to leave the house, except for Yoga. And seeing as touring is how most musicians make their bread and butter, I'd have to work something out where I could take my wife and kid along so I wouldn't be lonely and succumb to wanton groupies.
Band History:
/bio

Brittney Sparse is Charles R. Terhune, aka Cathode Ray Tube, aka Super Barrio Mothers, aka C-fom label head, aka Founder of "It's Yoga, bi***es!" International. He began making music at 14, but made noise long before using tape recorders, vacuum cleaners and whatever else he could lay his hands on. In 1999 he founded C-fom records in Boston. C-fom then released the seminal "Boston not London" compilation in 2000 . In 2001, he released "Subzero Sensei" to critical acclaim. Following a thwarted attempt at world domination, he turned to the world of power vinyasa yoga. But there was no beat, so he went out to find it. Brittney Sparse is the result, a paring of simple melodies, concise beats, and sonic architecture all glued together into one beautiful package. Brittney Sparse's 2004 release "The Mountain Sisters" will be available for consumption in Summer 2004.
