Beat Bandits is anyone who works on projects with
the Beat Bandit, Casey Lasem. Weather it be an MC, musician, or beatmaker/producer its all about
making good music for the people.
Why this name?
Beat Bandits was created because alot of hip hop was created by sampling old funk, classical, ect.
Casey dose sample but dose not steel music, he may steel that kick, snare or horn sample, but proving that is nearly imposible. Whats ironic about the name is that Casey playes most of his own instruments on the CD's or has other musicians in on the sessions.
Do you play live?
We play live shows mostly in Toronto but can't wait to start touring. The Elmocambo in Toronto
is the prefered venue. Alot of the live shows are done with a live band and features open mic
with band playing the beat.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has changed it in a way where it is easier to get your music heard, but at the same time it would cause record labels to lose money and recording contracts to have smaller budgets.
But my opinion is, if I'm not signed now,
I'm not loosing sleep over it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depending on the contract. I'm mainly looking for world wide promotion and distributing, I'm not looking for some label to tell me whats going to sell.
Band History:
Casey started in the biz as a guitar player in an alternative rock band at the age of 12. Over the years was influenced into the more urban genre, he started to make "beats" and recording local MC's. It wasn't long before he ran into Young D, or Detroit as they called him. Detroit had just moved to the east suburb of Toronto from the US and started recording song after song in Casey's basemnet using a computer, DJ mixer and Headphones to rap through. The songs were a hit in the neighbourhood. At this point they had also added a few members to the group. DJ Diverse who made beats and rhymed and warlord another MC. Over the years the recorded and sold 3 different underground albums to the Toronto and Vancouver Greater area's, Sales totaling into the thousands. It wasn't long before Casey needed to enhance his skills so he whent to school to take Music Production and Engineering. Though that time Beat Bandits
kept recording using the schools facilities and studio's througout Toronto. Beat Bandits also started to use R&B singers in there songs to give the music a more commercial apeal without losing the original underground hip hop feel. Since then Casey and Detroit have kept a strong relationship recording songs and doing live showes. DJ Diverse Also still producing various artists such as Karona & Elements. Other than that, Beat Bandits will continue to make music because thats what they love regardless if they are not signed.
