Singer/songwriter Meliesa knows what she wants. She is an artist with a vision. It’s not the trappings of fame and fortune that inspire her to press on, but her overwhelming desire for the world to experience her music.

Meliesa’s current release, Some Neglected Toy, is a collection of well-crafted songs composed from her life experience. They span the range of style of the Adult Alternative genre. Some songs are soft and deeply emotive while others, such as “Phone Call” and “Jealousy,” rock with brutal honesty. This CD literally has something for everyone on it.

For Meliesa, life is all about music. She possesses an extreme passion for music and expressing herself through the craft of songwriting.

“All my songs are written from life; each one an ‘emotional snapshot’ of what I am feeling the moment I’m writing,” she said. “I write for my personal satisfaction, and if a song I write touches even one person, then I have been successful.”
Why this name?
Well, it's just me, so I used my own name.
Do you play live?
I don't play live currently. I did everything in the studio myself, so I have no band to back me. I am holding auditions right now and expect to have my live show put together in the next few months.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The music industry today is ALL about digital distribution. This is really the only way an artist can hope to get exposure. In a business populated by sharks and moneychangers, indie musicians and the people who support them need to stick together to keep real music available to the masses.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
It would have to be the RIGHT contract. I am not some teeny-bopper with stars in her eyes. I'm older, my style is mature, my vision is clear, and I don't need some monkey in a suit running my life for me. I am past that. Success to me is defined by reaching people with my music, having them relate to it, and being able to make a living doing it.
Band History:
Meliesa cut her musical teeth in the late ‘80’s hair band scene on the Sunset Strip. Fronting the band DeAllen, she frequently played original material in clubs such as the Roxy, the Whiskey, and Gazzarri’s, where the band was reportedly a personal favorite of the late Bill Gazzarri.

After DeAllen disbanded, Meliesa fronted several cover bands. She eventually gained the golden opportunity to belt out some cover songs at Cabo Wabo, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where the club’s owner, Sammy Hagar, joined her on stage. Sammy was quite impressed with Meliesa’s vocal talent, exclaiming to a sound tech that her voice “gave him chills.”

After the days of metal and poseurs, Meliesa began to take her songwriting more seriously, and enrolled in some music theory and history courses at a local college. She also took vocal training with Dennis Parnell, Jennifer Goodrich and Ann Chase. Mrs. Chase’s classical approach to vocals helped Meliesa find the way to unlock her vocal potential.

In the summer of 2002, Meliesa began writing and recording the tracks for Some Neglected Toy with Producer Tim Dolbear at his studio, Eclectica Studios, in Montclair, CA. Without a band backing her, Meliesa was forced to hone her drum, bass and keyboard programming skills in order to create the driving rhythm section on her album.

All the hard work and long hours in the studio paid off. Some Neglected Toy was released in January 2004, and met with some measurable success of online national and international purchases of the CD.

“My music is like a child I want to see succeed,” Meliesa said. “My music is good and needs to be shared.”
Your influences?
From the beginning: 70's pop, then the great bands of the 80's; Rush, AC/DC, Journey, Van Halen, The Police, U2, Heart, Pat Benatar, Dalbello. I am also a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan. Later I developed a taste for classical and world music. Now how much of all of that has crept into my style, you'll have to tell me.

Overall, I have been influenced by great melodies, driving rhythms, true-to-life lyrics, and musicianship far beyond the standard 1-4-5-1. :p
Favorite spot?
Mmmm.... I love the San Diego area, where I live. But I am also very much in love with northern California and the Portland, Oregon area.

The place that has stirred me the most, though, was Turkey. Istanbul, Kusadesi, Efes... incredible. And the music is just stunning.
