Paradox Backlash is a danish chaotic-hardcore band, with a sound sort of like the Dillinger Escape Plan meeting the Locust. It should however be considered a project more than an actual band, as the styles we move in are very diverse, and we also produce a lot of artwork and participate in other projects. That being said, go and have a listen if you like hardcore, alternative metal, punk, grindcore or even just plain noise.
Why this name?
The name Paradox Backlash refers to an expression used in a role-playing system. In Mage (by White Wolf), Paradox Backlash is what happens when something violates a natural law, and that is exactly what we want to do - go against any norm or standard, and set our own. Mind you, at the conception of the band, we had not listened to (for instance) pure-noise acts, and we have been forced to re-evaluate our progress on moving the musical boundries... however we're getting there.
Do you play live?
Sadly, Paradox Backlash is hampered by not having any drummer! Instead we use a drum-machine, but we have yet to try this out live. We are dying to get out there and play though, and are searching frantically for a drummer currently.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Hopefully it will mean that since less popular music is bought (as it is downloaded instead), there will be a larger venue and more bands on the pop-scene to satisfy the users. We also believe that it causes people to become more aware of music, to listen to more music and also more different music.
The internet is also great for upcoming artists such as our selves, since (for instance) mailing a single cd to an adress in the US would cost us more than buying a retail cd. Also, many smaller bands, for instance on the underground scene, are not commercially available in Europe, or even outside their respective country, and without the internet, listening to and perhaps buying these bands' material would be virtually impossible.
All in all, the internet is probably the best thing that's happened to the music industry since the LP.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes.
Band History:
how it all started
Paradox Backlash started out somewhat recently, back in the year 2000. Back then we were playing in a NU-metal / weird metal band called F.U.B.A.R. (F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition), a name that originated from the fact that none of the members had ever received any real training in their preferred instrument, except the guitarist (amadeus), who had played back in 5th grade or so. f.u.b.a.r. consisted of 4½ members: mega3 (leadsinger of paradox backlash), amadeus (guitarist in paradox backlash), jamal (kidney donator in paradox backlash) and martin.
The band was doomed before they even started out, but when their first drummer, martin, got a serious stomach illness, followed by a depression and skizoid delusions, they were really f***ed. Thankfully, the drummer Støj (literally "noise" in danish) replaced the old drummer, and the foundation was laid again. Sadly, Støj was later diagnosed psychotic and paranoid, and the band were once again drummerless.
All this may seem like a tacky, fictional heavy metal band story, but it's true. And not only that, it was also the foundation on which Paradox Backlash started out. Without a drummer, but with lots of ideas, the remaining members of FUBAR devoted their attention to another project they had been working on - Paradox Backlash. founded by mega3 and amadeus, pb was a kind of free zone, where anything was acceptable, and all ideas received equal respect. in short, the idea behind the project was to explore the limits of what is acceptable as music, preferably while having fun at the same time.

the audial enema experience
as f.u.b.a.r. came to a complete halt, with no drummer and a lack of interest for the more mainstream style, pb received founders' mega3 and amadeus' full attention. the first tracks were written - a mixture of electronic effects and distorted guitars, barely recognizable as music. The themes revolved around, cartoons and old computergames, imagined dangers (such as the evil spirit living in amadeus' enourmous chimney), and our mutual disgust for the mainstream, capitalism and the modern humans technocratic lifestyle.
Soon we began creating songs with recognizable patterns, reoccurring riffs, drums, vocals and so on. probably the first consistent track we ever wrote was "1-800-ragnarok", a 7-minute acid trip through layers of different styles, weird sounds and pure noise... however, the real turningpoint came when we recorded "applejuice in the morning" - our first try at using weird timesignatures, which was later to become one of our defining characteristics. from here on pb evolved with every new track, and soon had a lot of material, using our trusty drummachine software as a temporary replacement for a drummer.
once we had enough material, we decided to release an 11-track demo, that spanned musical styles from chaotic hardcore to pleasant ambient electronica. this wonder of the world was named "the audial enema experience", a fitting title. The demo was, however, never printed, though all the tracks were released to the public via the internet.

the lounge campaign
at this point, The Delphi Oracle, also known as "Thunderthumb", had joined the ranks, and we were stuck with two bassplayers and still no drummer. our newly released tracks meant that pb received a lot of attention, but this only made the lack of a drummer suck even more - we were stuck in the studio. at the same time, our music was rapidly becoming more and more technical, and our standards for potential drummers naturally became higher and higher...
while the lack of a drummer obviously sucked, mega3 and amadeus continued to write music, this time around more consistently and with more planning. we had learned from our mistakes experiences with the first demo, and this time we wrote all the tracks before starting the recording process. also, we had bought more and better equipment since the first demo, and this time everything was mixed at the same time, which made the next demo sound far better and much more consistent.
this next demo was named "the lounge campaign" - a title that reflected pb's ambitions of actually making more of an appearance on the danish metal / hardcore scene, and actually printing the demo this time. "the lounge campaign" also spanned many styles of music: punk, jazz, jungle, various electronic music, and even a cartoon theme electro-pop cover! the focus on this cd was, however, much more apparent - chaotic hardcore. The timesignatures had become more extreme, the tempo higher and so on. it was clear where the next collection of tracks would be headed.

in the meantime...
"The lounge campaign" did catch many peoples attention, for instance the danish band the psyke project, whom we greatly admire - there was actually talk about having the psyke projects lead screamer martin perform the vocals on one of the new tracks on "the lounge campaign", but because of logistical difficulties this never came to pass. in the end, only about 40 copies of the demo were made, but the positive response we got from various people, including some of the bands we admired ourselves, made the next demo inevitable.
it was a good while before we began the writing of the next demo. in the meantime paradox backlash produced a wealth of more experimental music, fun covers and smalltime collaborations. this was a good diversion, and meant that our next demo would be more focused on hardcore only.
and hardcore it was - the next and somewhat recently released ep is by far the most technical and brutal release we have on our conscience. it took a long time to produce considering its relatively small amount of music compared to for instance the lounge campaign, but on the other hand it probably contains just as many notes! after this though, we plan on going where ever we want, experimenting more, and hopefully find a drummer before the next release...
Your influences?
We probably sound like:
the Dillinger Escape Plan + the Locust meeting in a small club and starting a brawl with a gang of pinball machines
700 huge industrial vehicles running over a sea of glass and living cats - noisy but beautiful.

Bands that influence us greatly:
Dillinger Escape Plan
the Locust
Blur
Converge
Crowpath
Fantômas
Düreforsög
Jaga Jazzist
System of a Down
Every Time I Die
among many others...
Favorite spot?
Aalborg, Denmark.
Equipment used:
We may not be exclusively electronica, but we do have a lot of these elements - we use computers, various software like Reason 2.0 and good ol'e Cool Edit 2000.
Also, we use guitar-effect pedals, chain-distortions, control-pedals, microphones and just about anything that makes sound. We then cut these sounds up or mix them with other sounds to produce results like "edible pet" or "hibernation vs. insomnia".
Anything else...?
Don't forget that Paradox Backlash is a very "wide" project! we also do a lot of artwork, and you can find some of the PB-artwork on our website: http://www.paradoxbacklash.com . You can also go to http://phoenixdk.deviantart.com or http://mega3.deviantart.com to see what else the various members produce grafically.
