Mostly self-taught with the exception of a year of study with Michael Papenburg, Gwynn started playing guitar 20 years ago at the age of 15. Inspired to pick up the instrument by the larger than life persona of Jimmy Page, he practiced fervently to become the technician necessary to ‘wow” others with such artifice. Ironically, it was Page’s musicality; indeed, any musicality that eluded him for the first ten years. Such has been the struggle to force the technician to serve the artist. It is also ironic that the lack of proper ear training prevented Gwynn from transcribing the parts of his influences such as Lifeson, Hackett, Gilmour, Fripp, DiMeola, Belew, etc…this forced him to develop his own unique style. While the influences are unmistakably present, it’s also obvious that he plays with a “voice” all his own. Needless to say, he still doesn’t know Stairway to Heaven.
