Why this name?
"One day, Killa Kut and I (Remix) were talking about putting together the best turntablist crew in the city. We joked around with a lot of names, but in the end I suggested the "FREE AGENTS" because it fit so well with what each of us were doing. We were both just kind of playing with whomever gave us a chance or where ever we found a chance. We both kind of agreed on it, although Killa (Kut) wanted to go with another, funnier name. In the end though, it just stuck: we were both "FREE AGENTS" in the Houston music scene."
Do you play live?
"We play where ever we get to play, but mostly we're busy honing our collective skills and organizing our sound. We have played at dj battles, car shows, with touring groups, night clubs, after hour clubs, street festivals, poetry sessions, sound studios, and even motel rooms."
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
"It helps get us exposure, you just have to know how to make it work for you. You have to control it, not let it abuse you."
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
"Sure if the money and situation is correct, anyone would. But we each have to be happy with the deal, if there are any problems or doubts, then we would have to ask for a better offer. We play now without any major label's help, what difference does it make?"
Your influences?
"We draw from Qbert to Mixmaster Mike to Noize to Deeswift to Dstyles to John Coltrane to Rancid to Goldie to Linkin Park. Prety much anything goes, as long as it has a beat."
Favorite spot?
"Houston, Texas, no doubt."
Equipment used:
"6 Vestax Pdx 2000 turntables, 3 Technics 1200 turntables, 1 Stanton STR8-60 turntable 1 Pioneer CDJ 800 digital turntable cd player, 2 Vestax 07 mixers, 2 Vestax 06 mixers, 2 Vestax 05 mixers, 2 Tascam XS8 mixers, 10 Shure M44-7 needles, any possible record, Road Ready flight cases, Odessy flight cases, Marlborro REDS cigerettes, Marlborro LIGHTS cigerettes, and some other stuff that I can't remember right now."
Anything else...?
"I hope people like what we're trying to do as a crew and as a band. It may not be new to some people, but to many it still is. We just want to prove that Houston has skills, and that the turntable IS a musical instrument. Thanks"
