-markWINER. I play guitar as my main instrument, and I also play bass, keyboard, drums, and anything else that makes noise on the recordings. The songs on these pages are from my first solo CD, markWINER. All the music is instrumental, and it's mainly my outlet for expression. Music can create moods and tell stories without words. I leave it up to the listener to interpret the mood of the song and apply his or her own experiences to it. These songs all have meaning to me, as they were written to express my emotions around specific events.
Do you play live?
I used to play in Boston in several bands, but I now reside in Florida. Between work and family, I really only have time to pursue solo projects, so no...not at the moment anyway.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, it's allowed me to realize my dream. I've written, performed, produced, and distributed my first copyrighted CD, and I did it completely by myself, without the help of a label. I could have done this without the Internet, but it would have taken longer, cost more, and probably wouldn't have been nearly as much fun!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I make music for me...but if it makes other people feel something, that's awesome too. If a major label thought the world would benefit from hearing my music and wanted to help me distribute it, sure.
Band History:
I started playing guitar when I was 12. I met a great drummer who became my best friend, and we've been making music ever since. I've had the privilege of playing with some of the greatest people...not just good musicians, but really great people. Most of the bands I've been in were not really bands at all...they were more like a bunch of great friends, or even brothers & sisters, making music together and having a great time.
Your influences?
I guess if you were to label my music, you could call it instrumental-pop-rock-fusion. I mainly listen to heavy metal & jazz, but when I write music, this is what comes out...I cant really explain it. Most of it's fairly happy-sounding stuff.
Favorite spot?
New England. Denver's pretty nice too.
Equipment used:
I have a small home studio where I do all my work. I play Carvin guitars almost exclusively, and typically record direct with a Roland GS-10...if I do use an amp, it's a Peavey Classic 30 and a Studio Projects B3 mic. Keyboards are either a Korg EMX-1 or a Roland XP-10. For drums I use a Roland Studio Set electronic drum kit, or an Alesis HR-16 drum machine (old school!). Everything gets recorded onto a Fostex VF16 digital multitrack. From there it goes into the computer through an M-audio SPDIF card, then to the internet or CD. I'm sort of a nut about sound quality...almost to a fault. The Fostex is a really clean unit, and most of my instruments are recorded direct.
Anything else...?
Cats rule...especially heinous ones.
