Harpoon started from a phone call from guitarist, Mat Stevenson to drummer, Lil Goose enquiring if I would like to play some "out there" material and as I have always liked Mat's Guitar style, that was it. We both came from or went through the Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" Area, so we always got on like a house on fire.
Our singer and harmonica player is the fabulous Junior Hickey who has a great voice and plays cool Harmonica & also is a very good "Scat" singer . On Bass we have the funky Mr. Phil Hoffman who plays great with the drums and has a great bass sound. He also plays some pretty cool Bass Solos.
Why this name?
We think the people who Harpoon Whales should be Harpooned themselves.
Do you play live?
We play all the time. We have played the previous 2 'Brisbane Blues Festivals" and recently played the "Broadbeach Blues Festival". The band is very popular locally and we have a great CD available, and are mixing the recording of our 2nd, CD at the moment.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The Internet has been great for Harpoon as our songs are on playlists all over the world. Everyone I know that has heard the band likes it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Certainly would
Band History:
Harpoon started around 3 years ago and have done nothing but get better and better at each gig. It is a pretty high energy type of music, but we like to play that way as people don't go to see a band as background music. (we hope)
I can see nothing but positive expansion for the band as people in Sydney and Melbourne like the CD a lot, so I can see tours coming up. The next Album will contain the best songs the band has written yet and am really looking forward to it's release.
Your influences?
Buddy Guy, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Junior Wells, Sonny Terry, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Domino, Sex Pistols, Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rolling Stones, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Etta James, Eric Clapton.
Favorite spot?
BOSTON
Equipment used:
The Guitar and Bass use all types of sound effects pedals, but basically we like to rock and groove.
Anything else...?
Harpoon is a mixture of many styles, very funky and like to go out on extremes in the music.
